Anyone here ever "downgraded"?

What I mean by the term "downgraded", specifically within the Rolex world, is going from a supposedly "nicer" watch to a supposedly "lesser" because you prefer the "lesser" one? Any reason at all -- could be purely looks, comfort, anything.

An example would be going from something like a SkyD to a 114060, or a 116520 to an Explorer 1. Would love to hear any stories of those that have.

I hope it doesn't come across that I'm trying to say a 114060 or Explorer 1 (or any others that get mentioned here) are not nice watches, far from it, I just mean in the relative world of Rolexes.

100% I have, not within Rolex world, but other brands.

Those labels don’t matter, simply buy what you enjoy

I haven't but would if I preferred a so called lesser watch. When your spending the amount's a Rolex cost you may as well be 100% happy.

I'd rather have a 114060 than a SkyD.

Cost doesn't matter I just like the look of the Sub better.

Yes, I went from the WG sub to the SD4k. I got bored of the sub's blue dial and I like the slimmer lugs of the Sea-Dweller.

114060 went and 14060 stayed.

Wow!!! When I saw the title of the post I thought perhaps you were referring to wife/girlfriend. I was going to get a bag of popcorn and sit back for the responses!

Never downgraded but this thread brings up the Russell Crowe Art of Divorce auction, he sold 25 watches. Do not cry for him, he has another 25 watches he did not sell.

But i am sure some people have sold watches due to financial hardships. I think that is common.

Went from a wg sub as a daily to sd43. Really like the sd43. But I still have other pm watches so didn’t trade my only pm.

I'm going to say that there is no such thing as "downgrading", simply different tastes and trends.

I have gold and TT Rolex watches, but I don't wear them much because the trend of fashion favors SS models. I also don't wear a Day-Date since I left the board rooms, casual is my main flavor any more.

You could say that it is a downgrade, I just see it as a style/fashion change

Went from a YM 116622 platinum dial (MSRP 11,350 EUR) to a SD43 126600 (MSRP 10,450 EUR).

However, I paid 7,600 EUR for the YM (new) vs. 10,450 EUR for the SD43 (new).

Did I downgrade or upgrade?

I wear SS and PM watches on my rotation.

I look at it as different options depending on the situation, not downgrading.

Yes, I moved from multiple vintage sports Rolex (1016/5512/5513/6263/1019/1655/1665) to a vintage one-owner-for-43-years 6694.

I bought a ceramic Submariner date when it was first released, then sold it and bought a non-ceramic Submariner no-date, which I still wear to this day.

There's just something about the classics...

Price wise, I am these days wearing the lowest one (116234) in my collection and lock all of the rest to my bank safety box. Try to be a one watch guy for a few months to appreciate each watch again.

I've moved lateral? or perhaps it was a "downgrade"? or upgrade? Hahahaha

I went from having a minty vintage 145.012 Speedmaster Pre-Moon with a one-owner history who purchased it via the US Sixth Fleet (Navy) when he was on tour to a minty AP 15400.

Brand and watch wise: AP > Omega
Value wise: AP = Omega (give or take)
Perception of vintage/history: Omega > AP

I guess it depends on how you look at it. For me I bought the Speedy so low and I ended up enjoying the AP more that I would say the AP is better.

Never had the issue with a Rolex, my feeling towards the watch tends to last longer with them. Always wanted it to begin with and when I bought it, I haven't lost any love for my Explorer 1.

I get where you're coming from OP.

I prefer to think of it more as tastes and preference change once you've owned a reference for a while. You just get a better sense of what works best for you

So for me, the BLNR went out and the Pam690 came in. Is that a downgrade ? Money wise it was not but to most here it probably would be viewed as a downgrade.

To me, I've got the watch I want and that's all that matters

I have owned several Panerai and without a doubt that 690 is beyond beautiful. Just freakin' awesome.

Have always preferred straps to bracelets, so that colour combination of strap and watch on the Pam is to me perfect.
