- I GET THE AD CALL - Whilst out shopping -

As usual I'm plodding along, four steps behind the shopping trinity of my beloved wife and two daughters, arms heavily laden with all the last minute Xmas junk for family friends, teachers, netball coaches, friends of friends, you know the sort of thing.

I get the call on my mobile phone, "can you come down?, "it's here and there's something else you may want to see".

As it happens I am literally 200 yards from the AD when the phone rings so I dump my wife elder daughter and the mound of shopping bags into Starbucks and take my little girl with me to the "clock shop" as she calls it.

After the old "only would I do this for you" yarn, he shows me two watches that I had expressed interest in.

Miguass GV.

I've been on their list for 14 months and was No3 at the time. After I gave him some ribbing about him probably having overlooked me during the year he was at great pains to prove otherwise and brought out this huge leather consignment book to prove that this was not the case. They had gone absolutely ages without getting a merest sniff of one and then they get two in the last week, one of which is mine and the other for the name below me on the list. They also don't expect any more until AFTER the probable price hike Feb/March next year in which we will doubtless see a £4,000 Milguass and a £6,000 SS Daytona at retail.

I was ready to turn the watch down due to my pledge never to buy a new Rolex after the huge price hikes already this year but the watch "in the flesh" is just something else!

Next he shows me the Omega Alaska Project .

(pics ack - WUS / PuristPro)

There are only 1970 (less if you believe the story about the "internal" uptake of 200/300) of these watches and this one was one of the last serial numbers. Normally Omega take years to sell their "limited editions" but this one is a proper rare beast. There are 310 dealers in the UK and approaching 4,500 worldwide so he explained that their group (four ADs) were lucky enough to be allocated two watches and that most dealers won't ever see one with the larger boys getting a bigger slice of the cake.

It's another of those watches that just looks so much better in the flesh though the white lume applied against the polar white dial is daft indeed! The red doughnut jobbie is all very silly also and the straps will get grubby just by looking at them.

Which one to get? Whilst I can normally make actual real snap decisions in my daily working life I sit there like an asshole humming and harring over the two. Eventually I opt to take them both.

I don't even know what my credit limit is on my CC so I am a little anxious when the card machine takes an age before shuffling out the little white receipt thing. All the time my daughter is being entertained by a nice lady store assistant seemingly well versed in the art of distraction.

I then had to explain my actions to my beloved when I arrived back at Starbucks. Not so easy!

"Blah blah, rare" "blah blah wise purchase", "IBlah blah I'm gonna flip one of them and make a few shillings, don't worry love" "I've got too many watches (true) anyway".

... and the day carried on with me carrying all the shopping backs but there was only one back that I was holding on to with any purpose.

Upon reflection it is quite possible that I would have passed one or even both watches by if I had got the call when I was in the house. Who needs so many bloody watches and I kinda feel a little guilty with this sort of indulgence what with the credit crunch affecting so many people out there.

I wondered to myself whether I should slap on of them on Ebay and make a quick couple of hundred and shock my wife?

Then I thought "Nope" and that was that.

Please excuse the pathetic pictures.

I have subsequently found that my beloved Ixus 900 camera lent to my eldest girl to take snaps at her school prom was lost in action so I am left with a mobile phone for quick pics and these things are less than useless.

That Omega is sweet. I just received, this morning, a '74 Seamaster SHOM 200M NOS with mesh bracelet. I had to pry my DSSD off my wrist to wear the Omega. The DSSD is staring at me with a not too happy look in it's maxi dial.

Haha, I like the description of the shopping trinity.

Hi Paul

Wish I had an AD like that. That Omega is staring at me with longing in its eyes (or is it a reflection!)

I was thinking of buying a new one considering Rolex's future price hikes

Is the AD a long way from the centre of our fair country?

Many congrats and enjoy in health

Si

To be honest I have no particular relationship with the AD and have never experienced preferential treatment from them. It's not even as if I got a penny discount.

I do have another dealer who has supplied me in the past and checks in here now and again and may well read this thread with his nose a little out of joint.

He just doesn't get me the watches in a timely manner so I have to seek them elsewhere.

No names, no packdrills.

Great score Paul!
I wonder if your beloved and eldest were sitting in Starbucks waiting for your purchase the whole time? How long did this adventure take :-) After all, you had to carry the bags

Who cares?

The whole shebang took 25 minutes tops, I reckon. That includes any dithering by me.

Great story Paul! Kind of reminds me of my own story where I got the Daytona call while shopping in a store 40 miles from the AD and drove it in a ice/snow storm for fear it might dematerialize if I waited overnite. The Omega is great looking watch. I still would like the Daytona better with a black bezel. You're a brave man to make that purchase with three women along!

Huge congrats on those two great watches.
I am sort of kicking myself for passing on the LV when I had the chance.

Wow, you definitely don't do things by halves Paul.

Both watches are just damn gorgious, so I totally understand why you had to get both!

Enjoy them I know you will

You've ensured yourself a very Merry Christmas. Congratulations. Two beauties. I would love to see some better pics of the Alaska Project when you get the camera situation sorted out.

Chris,

It's great on the wrist, especially on the steel.

I forgot that I took a photo with my mate's camera earlier this afternoon. The scab is a big noise on TZ and he's just emailed the pic to me.

Cool story. I give you credit....you have ba**s. I fretted over buying my sub...I'm thinking..wow that is a lot of money..what I could do with it...my wife was with me and said...just get it...you want it ..get it..and I did. All I needed was encouragment and it was over. Now 2 watches at the same time...that is impressive.

All I could hear was a certain Mafiosa Mod's words ring in my ears "Do it !"

It's lucky they didn't have the Meteorite Daytona there. I'd be sleeping in the car tonight.

Nah,

Those who have had it on their wrist either own it, covet it or need the glasses.
