Daytona SS or Panerai 233

Hi guys and gals, which is more collectible and holds value better? I know they are totally different watch? But if you had to buy one which one and why?

I tried Panerai. Wasn't for me. I had a 270 and sold it and ended up with both SS Daytona's and haven't looked back once.

I wear a 233 almost daily, been alternating it with a SD. To me both are great watches and you can't go wrong with either. You have to make up your mind and follow your gut. I love both and would be fine with either as my only watch but the 233 right now would be the one if I had to pick just one.

Tough decision. For an everyday wearer, I would go with the SS Daytona. The 233 is on my short list if I ever decide to jump back into the Panerai world. From an "investment" standpoint, maybe not the SS Daytona anymore...?

I never thought that this would happen, but you can find SS Daytonas for less than MSRP. The SS Daytona market has softened up quite a bit. I am sure this will change once we get out of this economic slump.

Just purchased a 233 and have a few SS Daytonas, tough decision. Both are stunning watches. I must say the PAMs are really growing on me!
PAM 233- fewer around due to lower production numbers than Daytona.

Common sense overcomes "fanboyishness." Just the reality. If the knowledge base of the membership a year ago was the same as today, I suspect the results would be the same. Having purchased both in the last two years, guess what's worth more now?

I agree with you, and truthfully I am HAPPY to see most are on the 233. I always laughed at most people here since they only seem to wear Rolex Colored Glasses, it's as if it's the only and best watch out there.

I dig the 233, but I still do think that the the SS Daytona is an icon.

Again, it's not that either is less than a STUNNINGLY nice watch. I just wish we could be a bit more dispassionate about watches in general. The question was on holding value.

Bought a Daytona last Nov for $7950 (MRSP then) Bought a Panerai earlier that summer for $11,700. Daytona is now at $9K and the Panny is at $14,700 (pretty sure).

The resale value of Daytona is about US$9k now so its an increase from $7950.
The resale value of Pam 233 is about US$11k+ now so its around the same when you first bought it.

Daytona wins in holding value.

Well, if we were talking "status" that would be a different discussion now wouldn't it? Of course, then we'd be in another interesting debate on what constitutes status on the Rolex website. Gee, wonder how those entirely subjective opinions would add up? I vote for the Daytona -- the history makes it a top 20 watch of all time.

Let me add a couple of other comments to address the OPs questions. I personally feel the added functions of a date, a second timezone, better lume, and the fun that stems from strap changes also adds appeal of the 233. Now if you time a lot of things, maybe the Daytona, would be better for you.

Maybe, just maybe, someone can say something positive about another brand one day without it being viewed as an affront to Rolex.

This is great!!! Everyone is so helpful...thanks...I too are aim to Pam233 for the date. I guess I'll see what price I can get best for the money that would make my decision easier.

Thats comparing apples and oranges.
If you want to compare the Daytona compare it to a Pam Chrono

The 8 day is an AMAZING watch BUT you are also comparing a manual to an auto.

Compare the Daytona to the PAM 250 or 251, thats a fair heads up comparison.

Id have to go Panerai on this one, I am not a big chrono guy so the Daytona has never dont it for me. The Panerai Chronos just seem to match the rest of the Panerai line while the Daytona doesn't have the look of a Rolex to me (of course I wont argue its a very well known and highly regarded Rolex but if you showed a layman 10 Panerais and then their chrono theyd see the Panerai in it and I just don't think the Daytona is the same) IF that even makes sense...

With the Daytona being a flagship watch of the most recognizable watch manufacturer in the world, there is a much larger market into which you may re-sell a Daytona and it is likely that the re-sale market will remain there for decades to come thus providing you with a better long term return on investment.

My low opinions of Panerai are not too popular on this board, but I'm just giving my honest and sincere opinion when saying that I feel that the company's popularity is peaking right now and they will not be as popular in 5 to 10 years when their look and size are not as hot as they are at this moment. I don't think the brand is destined to disappear, I just see them returning to their more historic production levels in the not too distant future. And even if their popularity does not fade, you're still looking at re-selling into a much smaller market than you'd find for the Daytona.

The Daytona has lost much of its glamour.It's a bit "oldnews".

Its a simple test take a Daytona and place it next to a PAM 233 ..... No contest.The PAM wins and the Daytona looks a little lost.

Its all about individual taste,but after I bought my PAM 104,all the Rollies went and were replaced by more PAMs.

I too am in love with the 233 and can say I am lucky enough to own one. It gets more wrist time than any of my 9 other watches...
