for your first rolex get the sub..
If you don't you will only wish you bought a sub
the sub is a classic
so my advice would be ..get the sub
sub-consiously you will want a sub ..pictures worn by bond etc
sub sub sub

However you will never be able to get one from an AD they are virtually impossible to find and the lists are non existent for people who have never bought before

An alternative could be to

Have a look at the Airking ..a very different watch
Based on the SCC bloodhound world speed record clocks..is a milgauss without the polished center links ..at £1500 cheaper and I will say will be worth more than you paid for it in 10 years time
It is an ideal first rolex ..I love mine it's the rolex for the person who wants to be different and at £4550 brand new it's a relative bargain

Review to show watch clocks etc

Go and try some on and see what floats your boat first.

On the wrist is where it will live, and since its your first, it needs to be the one that tells you its the right one.

I'm just gonna say it. You're buying a luxury watch, which really defies the parameters of a strict budget. The only way it makes sense is to buy what you really like, not what makes the numbers work.

My opinion: find what you really like and if that doesn't fit into your budget, then keep saving.

This is excellent and sensible advice. The Sub recommendations, not withstanding, go visit the AD and try on as many watches as possible. You'll know when you've found *the one*.

Although I own a SubC, I didn't warm up to he Submariner until later. There are beautiful AirKings, Datejusts, OP's, that you'd be foolish to avoid in search of the beloved Sub. All are much closer to your price range and can be purchased almost immediately. (Unlike the iconic but somewhat elusive Submariner)

So, take some time and inspect as many watches as possible - buying a piece just to fit your budget could leave you unhappy and financially hurting when you flip it to buy your desired piece.

Best of luck & keep us posted.
Mark

This^^^.

But if you are determined to get a watch now the Explorer or the OP39 black or white are great choices in your budget.

What watches have you looked at and tried on to see how they feel and fit?

in the UK the answer is none that you can probably get. Keeping value or being flippable (increasing value vs retail) means its a no go for a first time customer. What is available you will take a pretty decent hit if you sell it including a Sub no date (which isnt really readily available anyway) or an explorer.

Buy what you like. Personally i would get an explorer II and work on saving an extra £950. Easy to find and i absolutely love mine.

ND Sub at £5450.

However you will struggle......but that’s where I’d aim.
Failing that the new OP 39 in White is nice, and the new AK and Explorer 1 are lovely and under £5k

You won't be 100% happy with it if you don't 100% like it. I can't tell you what you like. If I go to Watchfinder UK and search on a budget of £4750 to £5250 I get 36 Rolex watches back. If it had to be a Rolex, I would look for the one that appeals most. There are no Subs in that result, but that's not surprising.

If I were only able to have one Rolex, I'd safe a couple more thousand pounds and buy the best pre-owned 116610 LN Submariners I could find.

save a little more or add a little more, that would be able to get you sub no date.
