What is the big deal about GMT watches?

Why would you own one if you don't really travel much to distant time zones? I am in the US, can easily figure out time anywhere in other US time zones and other Asian, European, and African Countries using simple mental arithmetic. Why would you need a Rolex GMT or any other brand GMT? The dial on these watches looks more cluttered than their non-GMT counterparts. I am on the list for a Rolex GMT, mainly for the look and not the GMT function. I am thinking about why I actually need one.

It’s as you say - mainly about the look, rather than anything else. GMT watches tend to be a bit more svelte in comparison to their diver counterparts. They also tend to go better with a shirt in my experience!

Even if you travel - you should be able to calculate a time difference
To me it's about aesthetics. That's it.

Yes No Maybe So, agree you should be able to do the math. Sometimes its just easier to look at the dial. Central is now -6 Eastern is -5 ETC after a long day of flying just easy....but I use mine daily for work.

You just answer your question and also contradict your question. What’s the big deal with any Rolex for that matter. Why not buy Apple Watch which actually has a lot more useful purposes.

Because I don't need anything else in my life to charge. Apple Watch? No way in hell.

X2. Nobody needs a Rolex. We want them. You can survive without a gmt function but we want it. Each of my watches means something different to me. I appreciate them all for more than just their timekeeping capabilities.

Horological. GMT is the reason accurate timepieces were made and for several hundred years was the most important intellectual challenge that occupied the worlds finest minds.

Look good too.

Evan’s got his crew mates to take his 1675 from his PPK down onto the moon surface in a box while he remained in the module.

Has anyone worn a Rolex on the Moon?

Why do people buy super cars when there are speed limit...

Why do people care about how others spend their own money....

To balance the discussion lets divide it to pros and cons.

Pros:
Looks (something is magical about the looks of 2 colored bezel)
Useful for frequent flyer.

Cons:
Service cost is more expensive compared to less complicated watch.
Cluttered dial.

hmm.. what more you can add..

Actually with the stupid summer time change (and the change back) it's not obvious what the time the 2nd time zone is. For me, keeping track of time in Asia and the US is pretty useful. Of course, now when I need to change time when I land I have to change both the local time hand and the 24-hand time which is kinda annoying but tolerable.

They are just 'in' right now is my answer; I think people got 'subbed out' recently and are switching over to a watch that is wholly not that different from a sub but different enough that they are en vogue and thus prices reflect that.

What's the big deal about dive watches that can go deeper than the human dive record? What's the big deal about perpetual calendars when no watch is accurate enough to go years without being reset? What's the big deal about moon phases when very few people are druids or werewolves?

Sometimes watches are just fun.

Are you implying that people that wear moon phase watches are werewolves.

As a practicing Druid I take offense to that. The fact of the matter is that converts to druidism are at an all time high and it is clearly the largest pagan church in the world. People are drawn to druidism primarily for the costumes and the healthy outdoor surroundings. To insinuate that we are a minority along the lines of garden variety lycanthropism is a narrow minded insult.....

Thank you.

Well, druids seem to practice naked right ? Not a huge difference with nudist in anyway so where a moonphase might be a helpfull tool for you guys and woman a nudist always prefer a voyeuralarm on their smartwatch

Many draw comparisons between our mechanical watches and smart phones/Apple watches with the view that smart devices are “superior” to the automatic watches; well for me they are not necessarily so.

Whenever I travel overseas, one of the most important things for me is to keep track of the time back home. With a GMT I can practically raise my arm and tell the time back home in a matter of a second.

With my iPhone, on the other hand, I have to unlock the phone, go through a couple clicks, find the world clock in order to do that.

While the smart device’s ability to switch time display to any local destination is convenient in one respect, it makes me go through work to tell the time back home.

There’s something about a mechanical watch’s ability to maintain the fidelity of time keeping through different time zones that gives me peace of mind.
