Hi,

I need some advice on which watch to get or none at all.

I found 2 pre-owned Rolex Explorers 114270 from 2002 (Y-Series, Box and Paper only, 12 links) and 2005 (D-Series, full set including original purchase receipt), the result on the timegrapher on a quick test (about a minute or less) was: (2002) +0-2 sec/day (it fluctuated so I can't be sure), Amplitude 307, I forgot the Beat Error; (2005) +3 sec/day, Amplitude 297, Beat Error 0.5. Both watches are in good condition and lightly polished.

Both shops couldn't tell me the service history and I don't think they did any pressure test. I suspect they didn't do any servicing/cleaning because Y-Series Shop said good timegrapher result = good condition and the other shop just didn't give me a straight answer. Both shops are reputable where I live (Y-Series shop has more referrals) while the other has been in business for decades. I think most people buy for the aesthetics only and are not too concerned with the history or performance.

The Y-Series shop gives 2-years warranty with a buy back option and the D-Series shop gives a year on their watches without buy back option. The price difference is about USD$730.

Are timegrapher results good enough to buy the watch given the shops don't know the service history? Also is it worth it to pay $700+ more for a full set but slightly poorer condition watch?

The little reservation I had for the full set D-Series was the shop quoted me two different prices when I asked them a month apart, and didn't answer my questions directly (especially service history), and in some cases no answer. They gave me a wheeler dealer vibe for some reason.

You are too much concerned with the mechanics. It's totally irrelevant because a service will fix any problem easily.

Focus on condition of case, dial and bracelet.

I'd never buy a lesser watch in favour of a full set. I would want both, good watch and complete set and continue to search

I'll be honest. I don't know any of the performance numbers you've quoted on any of the watches I own.

So, I'm not sure what to tell you. As stated above, I would be looking for a good watch in excellent condition with a full set. Good luck,
