Opportunity for White DayC....but no papers

Ok guys, I have a shot at a decently priced white 116500 pre-owned—a little desk diving but otherwise excellent.

Fair price, still above msrp of course.......the one major caveat is no papers. Very very reputable local dealer however.

It’s giving me pause and wanted to hear from you guys first.

Would you still pull the trigger? Would this drastically harm resale in the future?

Thank you all. I love this place.

Negotiate a better deal then call Rolex for a new warranty card, will run you only $60.
People lose their cards all the time, but your dealer is likely holding that to hide AD identity.

Based on my experience, I don't believe this is possible.

Pretty sure they won’t do this. Best you will get is sending it in for service and getting service card which will prove it’s authentic and provide some additional warranty time.

the disturbing part regardless of getting a new card, which isn't happening is that price is the deciding factor. There is no good reason why a watch that has to be no more than a few years old has no papers. Price it cheap enough and anyone will buy it no questions asked, since its not cheap enough that's why it has so many voting pass. Its asking for trouble. You can price away reason, piece of mind, and possible shady circumstances of how this watch came to be in someones possession if its cheap enough.

a 30 year old vintage watch and that's more explainable.

If i was buying it i would at a minimum require a credit card statement proving the person i acquired it from was the one who bought it. My statements all go back years and i could prove i bought it pretty easily You can also get a replacement reciept from the AD, i know i can from mine. There is no proof of purchase at all here.

Watchfinder requires proof of purchase in addition to the warranty card to sell them a watch. If i was OP i would make sure this dealer at least has a proof of purchase from whoever sold it to them

In that case I would just spend the extra money and buy from DavidSW (or somebody similar) to get a complete set.

In my opinion, this is not a good price for an incomplete set. I would PASS on this one.

I am in agreement with all of you. This is the classic emotion versus logic battle. It’s a pass, what my gut said just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Box?
Where did it come from, private seller, trade in?
What is a "decent" price?

Given what is currently on the sales forum, that is not a "decently" priced watch given the MSRP. You are paying a huge amount for a less than complete package with unknown variables.

I would not buy that watch.

how would this reputable dealer know if it was stolen or not? These things take time to get into databases. What if it was stolen in the UK and sold in the US? Does a dealer check world wide for stolen watches? Just saying, its not that improbable and the dealer would have no idea. With the speed these things change hands it makes this even harder to track. 10 years from now when it goes to RSC for service you may get a surprise.

There is no excuse for a <2 year old watch not to have papers. Stolen watches rarely have papers as they are usually not stored in the same place.

My nightmare fear is the watch is indeed stolen and I service it 10 years down the road and it comes up hot in their database.

This company has been in business for over a hundred years however. It’s not some random shop. If that bears any value.

I had a break in 9 days ago and i still have not gotten around to submitting serial numbers for some of the items (no watches were taken though)

If it was a Daytona it could have been to a dealer and off to a new home before that. If i reported it on day 1, the police would have to upload it into their system immediately which i doubt they do. No idea on how Rolex handles this internally with a stolen database.

Also if i had a watch stolen, i would deal with my insurance company and be done with it. Do they then add it to a stolen database or contact Rolex? No idea, but its their watch as soon as i make a claim but i doubt they do it quickly. The system moves slowly

If you have $20k to spend on this watch, isn’t it worth spending a couple thousand more for one in brand new, unworn condition without any questionable history?

I prefer to buy with card/papers. Especially at the $20K mark. I would pass personally.
