Icon7 Best Tuxedo Rolex?

Not looking for a bulky sports watch. I have those galore.
I am thinking thin, elegant, perhaps even quirky.
Gold? Leather?
Hit me up.

If you’re looking to follow the “guidelines” for tuxedo wear, then no watch at all. Otherwise I’d go with whatever watch that matches your personality.

None; tuxedo goes without a watch, you'll look silly if you do

Silly? That's far fetched and outdated opinion. Not everyone is King or Prince to follow such rules. In real life, wearing a watch on Tux is not silly.. far from it!

A black tie event is formal and states a dress code. The dress code is no watch amongst other things.
The next thing is using brown shoes or sneakers under a Tux.
If one does not adhere to a dress code than why attend to a black tie event which specifically states on the invitation one is expected to do so ?

Free world, but it does look silly as would brown shoes, regardless how many people say it's OK.

Lol, you are comparing wearing watch versus wearing brown shoes or sneakers? Can you show me any invitation which specifically states that DO NOT WEAR A WATCH for this event!!

Not wearing a watch is more of etiquette behavior and not really a dress code. (Its like giving away your time for that host and not checking your time often and hence avoided at pure formal events). Its not something which will be set in stone for next few centuries. For example, in current times not having smart phone is more appropriate than say a mechanical watch on your wrist. So, you think wearing Tux without watch and carrying huge smart phones and pulling it out of pocket every few mins to check time is better option?

Also, check every black tie event out there and you see almost everyone is wearing a wrist watch and its part of the dress code now. (for example. Oscars, wedding etc).

It is ironic the world views bond as a beacon of gentlemanly elegance when Ian Fleming wrote the character as a brute of a man.

As the first reply says, black tie dictates no watch. If you are in sophisticated company you have no need to know the time (where else do you need to be?).

That being said, a Sub and a dinner suit are a good looking pair if the man has the right frame.

Cellini time, white gold, black leather strap, white dial would be my choice.

Convention states that you shouldn’t wear a watch because you shouldn’t be keeping track of time. There isn’t anywhere else better to be than the black tie event you’re attending.

However, if you want to wear a watch, it should have no complications- maybe seconds and/or date.

Personally, do whatever you want-I don’t think many people would care. I’ve been wearing a Rolex 16758 GMT Master in yellow gold, which I like with a tux.

Hey Tony, thanks for explaining the no watch / tuxedo thing. I've heard about this so-called "fashion faux pas" for years but never heard the reasoning behind it.

Quirky? How about a Rolex King Midas or platinum Cellinium.

An all gold Day-Date is a classic option. There's always the Cellini line which is Rolex' dressiest offering. The Explorer I is a sports watch but it can be dressed up but I wouldn't call it "quirky" although it has the 3-6-9 dial.

The Milgauss would probably be too thick but I think that watch is quirky and classy at the same time. Daniel Craig wore it with a Tux.

A pocket watch is acceptable w a tuxedo plus it’s so retro it’ll be cooler than James Bond

It's what I've done. I have my great grandfather's 14k Waltham double hunter. It's beautiful, elegant, and mint. I had it fully restored removing all dents, polished the gold, the porcelain dial and hands cleaned of dirt and dust. It's on a thick 14k chain that was a necklace of my father's that I had converted.

Definitely cool and a conversation piece when people see it.

The idea of not wearing a watch with a tuxedo is a very old tradition. But in the age of modernity it's antiquated with an overwhelming majority of people including those who attend black tie affairs. I would venture to guess most don't even know the "no watch" protocol.

rolex doesn't make that... i wouldn't consider even a Cellini as thin or elegant. IMO you need to be looking at ALS as a Lange 1 meets all criteria (sort of).. thinness is passable, elegant for sure, and quirky. Otherwise get a calatrava

Moser also fits the bill here they are very quirky watches even in the very simple time only models.

What I do like about the Cellini moon phase over a Lange 1 is its robustness. Screw down crown (100m water resistant), beefy case and solid 3195 movement. Not the same level of finishing as the Lange of course, but it is a great watch.

i dont dislike it. I probably wouldn't choose it personally for a dress watch, but there is nothing wrong with it. I tend to think most of them are on the more casual end of the dress watch spectrum hence why it wouldn't be my first choice with a tux

Completely true, it is not a slim dress watch by any means and it would indeed look a bit out of place with a tux.

Personally I'd just pick my Cartier tank, small, thin and under the radar.

Agree with Tyler. What you're looking for is probably not a Rolex.

But, hey, since you asked, this is what I would wear. It would fly in the face of all convention, but heck, I would still grin every time I checked the time.

(And yes, I check the time when I wear a tux. Gasp, the horror. )

This is a wonderful timepiece. What are we talking here?

I wear my GMT with tuxedos but I agree that a slimmer, gold watch with a black leather band is the way to go.
