Discontinuation of all-black GMT understandable

I was rather shocked, then sad, to see Rolex discontinuing stainless steel GMTs on oyster bracelet with Basel 2019. In particular, the discontinuation of the classic all-black 116710LN which i wrongly thought was a color scheme that would be maintained forever. First impression was that Rolex made a big mistake of killing a classic.

After that news sunk in for a day or two, I think I now understand why. When the 116710LN came out (circa 2010, correct me if I'm wrong), it was meant to carry the 50th anniversary design --- hence green hands and lettering. Given this is a decade later, it seems fitting, but sad, that it's time for the all-black/green hands color scheme to end.

What do you folks think?

Agreed. It will probably be reissued next year with the new case, jubilee bracelet and red GMT hand.

Yes the switch towards the Jubilee bracelet is very much on the cards given the need to differentiate the GMT from the submariner

Imagine if Rolex really wanted to blow our minds and released a Sub on Jubilee next year

I also think the switch is meant to protect the white gold models.

Thanks for sharing. Are you saying that Rolex is discontinuing GMTs on oyster bracelets completely?_

Agree. It will be back with white text and red 24hr hand. Probably on a Jubilee bracelet - as has been stated in a few other threads by a bunch of people.

But please don't come back as a 42 size case. I find that a bit big (like the latest Explorer II).

Maybe Rolex wants steel Gmt’s only with jubilee and not have both a steel and white gold on oysters as with the BLNR.

Will a Coke be in steel on jubilee? Hopefully next year.

Never could get quite used to the green hand, but I have a feeling it will be back with a movement update next year.

Don’t really think it will be back ever :(
GMT is nownthe “colorful” series so submariner and seadweller will be the black bezels imho

All black Gmt versions were released before the 116710ln, like the ss pepsi it will come back almost for sure. The question is kind of when.

If it comes back in the near future it is likely with oyster. Jubilee is less likely otherwise it should be done this year with the BLNR.

I doubt it will be back anytime soon, it seems that Rolex wants to differentiate between the GMT and Submariner lines by having the GMTs all have bi-color bezels and the subs have single color bezels.

I'm not sure about a red hand or an all jubilee GMT lineup.

I had initially thought that this would be re-done with the ceramic bezel and new movement, but someone at Basel said that Rolex PR told them that all GMTs going forward will have bicolor bezels, where the diving series (Sub/SD) will have monochromatic bezels. Just a rumor, as nobody knows what they're going to do, but an interesting move to differentiate the GMT from the Sub.

What has been brought up before is that if they do an all jubilee lineup for GMTs, manufacturing is more streamlined (ie more supply) and might increase their profit margin.

I think it will either be released again with an updated movement and red hand, or later when there is a big change to the overall GMT design, (gmt Master III maybe), and it leads the charge as it did when the ceramic bezel was first introduced. If it’s the latter, then it could be some years before we see it again, if ever?

Wasn't the tt 116713 the first ceramic gmt? I believe it came out a year before the ss black gmt.

I agree for the most part. I just have trouble rationalizing the oyster bracelet not being available on any SS GMT
