Advise on a pre-owned 214270 MK1

After a few trips to my local AD and looking at a 214270 MK2 in the case I finally got to speak with the owner of the shop. I had previously worked with the timepiece specialist. I was discussing some of the watches that I've seen there and then be sold, Explorer II Polar, GMT-Master II, etc.

He says "oh so you've been here a few times lately it sounds like?" So I explain that I've been talking with his watch guy and looking for the right piece to commemorate my wedding. He asks if his guy has shown me the rest of the watches...well, well, well. Turns out they have a Root beer GMT Master II, a Sub (116613LB), a pre-owned Explorer II black dial, and a pre-owned 214270 MK1 in the vault. I ask him about a black sub and he said he could get me one by the end of the year. Now I have SO many decisions to make, but I really love the 214270.

If you have made it this far, you're a saint! My question is the 214270 MK1 they have priced at $5200 and they said they will give me a 2 year house warranty. What are your thoughts on this price? I'm going to buy my wedding bands there as well, do you think they will work with me a little on the price?

The first version of the reference, it has full white gold arabics with no lume, and the hour and minute hands are a little shorter. "Mark 1"

I would say if it’s less than 5 years old and in good shape that is a okay deal.

When I tried it on it looked great. No obvious wear, clean crystal and bracelet. It was purchased at their shop in 2015.

For a few hundred more you can get an MK2 which is superior IMHO. Congrats on the pending nuptials

$1350 more plus tax, but yes I agree.

$6550 (new Mk II) - $5200 (Secondhand Mk I) = $1350 difference for a brand new Mk II.

Compare used versions of both. There's a used Mk. II in classifieds here for 6000, already 800 difference instead of 1350. And Mk II looks much better than Mk I in addition to being newer.

Yes, it's more money. But given that it's for your wedding, I'd say this is worthwhile money to spend. Having your name on the warranty card and having the story it has be 100% yours is of value to me (at least in my opinion).

That being said, values of all Rolex sports watches are creeping up. $5200 is about what I've seen for full set Mk1s on watchrecon, so I wouldn't necessarily say it's a "good deal" as opposed to "market price".

The look of the Mk1 vs. Mk2 is completely subjective. I tried on both when I bought my Mk1 and found the Mk2 looked a little too casual for my taste. The hands have never bothered me and the white gold numerals are a unique touch in the watch world.

I’d say go for it. I actually like the Mk1 WG arabics than the newer Mk2 lumed arabic.

Price is just about right.

I have the mk2. The full lume and “fixed” hands are perfect. I had same decision and went new mk2. Both are great watches.

OP
The watch MK1 is a good deal, not a great deal. Does the watch have all links (12), does it come with warranty card, manuals etc? Boxes? Complete?
I have owned the former version in the past and the short hands bothered me. Rolex did a good job in making the hands longer and full lume at the 3,6, 9.
If you search 214270 on this TRF FS forum, you will see similar deals.

I own the newer one now, and to me it is night and day with the longer hands and full lume.

Yes it's the full kit, I'm not 100% on all links, but I assume so. I'm going back today and going to see if they can do anything on the price for me. Shy boy gets no cake!

See the link I left you above to compare.
I would only buy complete and great deal.
You may want to ask if watch has been polished?
Good luck.

Buy it. Plus you're building a relationship with your AD ( ie spending money with him ) and it sounds like it could get you some good stuff down the line.

Agree. And FWIW, think the white gold numerals not only look better, but make the watch a bit more versatile for wearing.

IMO the added cost to buy the MK2 is money well spent, when you consider it’ll truly be - your - brand new watch and all of the mileage on it will be you own. I’m into the heirloom/posterity/nostalgic aspect of these watches and for me, much of that is lost in buying someone else’s watch. But I’m also a biased new owner of the MK2 and I think the new design/lume is far superior...

Just search on 214270 on the FS forum
Good luck

X2 I picked the Mk1 for the same reason, and it was only marginally cheaper than the mark 2 brand new.

Well folks, I went with the pre-owned MK1. After looking at both my fiancee and I discussed the pros and cons of buying a pre-owned watch, and the differences with the dial and hands. After picking out our bands and discussing the price of the mk1 with the owner he came down enough on the price to sell me on it. He also gave me the two year in house warranty stating that if there were any issues he would send it to RSC and cover any cost. Pre-owned downsides aside, I'm super happy with the purchase and can't stop staring!

edit: Forgot to attach the wrist shot!

Congrats! Sounds like you bought what you wanted and that’s much more important than the cost. And congrats on the nuptials. :)
