Wonder if there was an auction premium on top of the sale price as well.

The buyer’s premium was another 25% on top of the hammer price.

Think the majority of people dont understand why anyone buys a Rolex in the first place. Buying at Sothebys just a way to add more status.

My guess is they trust Sotheby"s so they know they're buying an authentic piece. Plus, of course a bit of posh status makes for great conversation at a cocktail party, yacht launch or a nosh at Elaine's.

Despite it being a fine watch, that price and those that pay it is ridiculous for a six digit Sub. Man, more money than brains as the saying goes.

Daytona Ceramic should be selling at 40K if Hulk sold for 18K. No way in hell Hulk should be near Daytona ceramic. Current price of Daytona is a bargain!

You guys think that's expensive, lols....probably just grey dealers bidding the watch up for a high sale price so that in return second hand prices will soar.
Rolex is the new Wall Street and I don't think market manipulation of the resale market is impossible. Hodinkee is the biggest manipulator.

Hahaha! This is getting fun.
I bet some dealer may even hold large quantity of hulk. Wanting for the right opportunity to dump.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was Rolex themselves that actually made the bid.

That's just silly. Especially when you consider there are more grey dealers than McDonalds in HK, many of which are holding multiple Hulks for sale.

I totally expect it is either Rolex or a grey dealer who did this to further inflate the market.

Agree 100%

Why would anyone pay to buy from Sothebys at this price when they can walk down the road and pick out of 100s of gray dealers right next to each other for $12k-$13k all day for a used piece. Market manipulation at its finest.

Some grays really know how to try to push the limits.

I believe the final price quoted here includes the buyer's premium of 25%. If I've done the math correctly, that puts the final bid at $14,000. (Still the buyer is writing a check for $17,500.) There is likely a commission due from the seller as well and there may be some fees for photography, etc. In the end, Sotheby's is likely writing a check to the seller for less than $13,000. Figure that kind of a spread for all the watches sold in the auction, and Sotheby's has a very good thing going.

Yes, maybe a faked auction but the LVc is one of the next watches which will be discontinued - for sure!

I wonder if I took mine to Sotheby's and showed them my post count how they could hype up mine?
