Rolex as an asset or not

My apologies if this conversation has been had before, i have searched and looked back a couple of months but nothing sprang out.

I’ve seen a lot of debate on the rising prices and many TRF members have referred to their watches as assets. To give my own tuppence, i purchased my watch in the hope that i will never have to sell it. If i did, it would be due to extreme changes of circumstance only. That said, when i set out to buy it, i did look for a complete set in order to ‘future proof’ myself as far as possible (i also assuaged my wife’s concerns by saying it’ll be worth something if we need it).

I guess my question to the group is, how do you view your watch(es)? As a joy to own and you’ll keep it/them come hell or high water; as an attractive investment, but an investment nonetheless; or in another way?

Many thanks,

I view them as a tool and something I enjoy. Just like any of my possessions, I won't buy anything I can't afford to pay for with cash. If my world goes crazy I will sell what I have to to live but that is a long way away....hopefully.

I buy watches to wear them. There are better ways to invest money. I'm not knocking those who do purchase as investment pieces, but I could never buy a watch just to leave it in a box with the intent to resell later at a profit.

I have never bought one as an investment. I’ve bought with the knowledge that they’re “safe” not to lose money, or very little, (ex: 4 digit Daytona) but never as an investment to make money. Like others have said...there are way better ways to “invest” money. These certainly aren’t going to fund your retirement plans.

Yes i agree completely. I’m not relying on my watch to keep me in liquor and ladies in old age (except the ones that like watches). If push comes to shove, it is something of value i can begrudgingly sell; but i really don’t view it as an asset - in the same way that a property you live in is not an asset in the pure sense of the word.

In the purest sense, an "asset" is just a valuable thing. So yes, expensive wristwatches are assets. Some, however, look at them as "investments," which seems silly to me. I'm more in the camp of if I get to a enjoy a beautiful item that I can later flip without losing too much money, I'm happy. Looking at them as an investment would ruin the fun.

It is an upside to a collection but not the reason I first purchased.

If you own one whether you are filthy rich or not, I would still say it is an asset.

We all want watches that we like the look of or enjoy, so that is my first thought on it.

Rolex as an asset or not

I buy not as investment

I buy to wear with expectations that the cash is gone and no longer available to use.

I assume watch purchases are a sunk cost

However it is an asset that If push came to shove and I had to liquidate and it made financial sense I would add to the cash reserves as a bonus but not counting on it at all

I would say a handful of NOS SS Daytona’s would be a good start to a retirement plan...

You would have been better off buying S&P500 index funds...

I have my collection insured, so it is of course an "asset," but it isn't an investment.

It’s definitely an asset.

Not all assets appreciate in value though.

Exactly. Absolutely an asset and it is fairly easy to covert it to cash. I am sure some view as an investment as well. Although, I would grade it as highly speculative and there is nothing that says an investment has to increase in value. That why we put “bad” or “good” in front of it.

Investment: No. Asset: Yes.
Insofar as it is something of value that you own outright and can be exchanged for cash if needed - yes, it is definitely that.

No one will be buying rolex if it dropped 50% immediately after you bought it. So while we all like to say they are not investments (and I agree), all of us enjoy the piece of mind of keeping money relatively secure in rolex watches.

I have 3 Rolex watches and i wear them all , never think to sell them . I am a jeweler and if i need some money , thanks god i have many other things in my shop to sell until my personal watches..

But IMO , it is very interesting that some people (Btw many of our TRF members) they don't accept Rolex watches as investment ...

Sorry but if you are clever , lucky and have enough money to effort , for example , if you manage to bought few Ceramic SS Daytonas , Blue SS Sky Dwellers or BLNR .. BLRO what ever from MSRP prices and keep them as a merchandise not as a tool or toy or watch to wear , it will be a good small investment ! Who can say no ? Every single day prices of that mentioned Rolex watches going higher and higher , isn't it ?

What is the difference between buying some stock or buying that famous reference Rolex watches ? ( If you look them as investment not as a watch to wear )

Ofcourse it is also about your budget .. as an investment you can buy a land for 200.000 USD or 2.000.000 USD ... you spend on Rolex watches 10.000 USD someone can spend on them half million...

Why many people shy to accept this ?

Aren't you buying Rolex because it is reliable , trustable and beautiful time pieces ?

(Ps: Apologize for my poor English as it is not my native language )
