Thought/pics of AirKing Afficionados

Indulge me on this one please...

The 34mm Air King is iconic. It has a wonderful history and exudes pure class just like the Submariners and GMTs of old. But, Hey we all know that 34mm is considered waaaay to tiny for manly wrists these days. I think maybe not. It just takes getting used to like most things in life. And there are great deals to be had on these Air Kings.

Would appreciate getting thoughts and opinions of those Air King owners and wearers. Pics would be great!

Thanks much

The newer version of the AirKing is a bit quirky but I do like it.

I agree. And it has great wrist presence. Really fits the wrist well

Love my 34mm air-king. It's so comfortable because of the small case and it wears large on my wrist. Excellent value buy, I'm so happy I bought it a few years ago when I was in Milan. The 34mm air-king is not in production anymore by the way.

Wasn't a big fan until a buddy of mine got one recently. It's really nice in the steel.

I think Rolex hit a home run with this. Quirky dial, that has had Rolex fans in uproar but, its a rare departure for Rolex into a fun piece with a dash of color and, that unconventional dial config. I think it’ll be a sleeper and gain a cult following at some point.

OP, have I read your thread wrong or are you saying its a 34? Its a 40.

I just wish they would bring back the Air-King date.

I used to have one many years ago. I miss it

Me too! My first Rolex was a TT Air King date. 14 years of trouble-free timekeeping. The 34mm case *was* a little small but that was my only quibble. The TT / Fluted / Jubilee / Date configuration made it look like a (slightly) small Datejust.

I, too miss that watch. The newest iteration is quite nice, sort of funky-cool in a Non-Rolex way. (A nice departure.) I can't seem to warm up to the Arabic 3, 6, 9 chrome or white gold large numbers however, other than that, a cool watch for those who want something a little different.

Mark

I like the new one but 34mm is too small for a modern daily. 36mm works, but I see that as the minimum

That definitely depends on wrist size. I have small wrists and my 34mm air-king fits perfect and looks amazingly proportional.

Ahhhh... the love or hate Bloodhound!

This is a rare beast in the model line-up, and it has a interesting story behind 'why'.

It was purely brought back from the dead to celebrate and mark the Bloodhound Land Speed record attempt project, Rolex wanting to be associated with the Land Speed record to fall in with the branding ethos, was a main sponsor and this resulted in the cockpit 'over ride' dials being designed and produced by them... this watch was designed to echo and celebrate the achievement... so, a kinda special edition, without the 'special edition' tag! (we all know Rolex go in for all that)

Now, the project fell into administration, and lost all its sponsors as a result.

The Bloodhound project has now been re-started by a private businessman... which will fail as no high profile sponsors have been found after the first failed attempt...WITHOUT the Rolex dials!

So you see... this new Air King already has a wonderful story behind 'WHY' it was created... I like things like this, a watch with a 'real' story behind it.

Just wait for the dial to be discontinued shortly (I give it until Basel 2020) and see the collectors come out wanting one!

I can't post pics yet as a new member but my wife bought me a new Air King for our anniversary. It's my first Rolex and I used to not be a "Rolex guy." But something spoke to me with this watch. Maybe because even some Rolex owners don't even know what it is. I'm loving 39-40mm watched lately and this feels great. This and my Damasko dominate wrist time at the moment.

For me, the Air King to have is the new 40mm 116900 model with the quirky dial. Let’s just say that Rolex “digs” deep on this to make a watch that is so UnRolex — Green/Yellow combo, the 3-6-9 non lumed hour marker (believed to be leftover from the Exp 1 MK1 model), plus the Faraday cage (believed to be an old stunt pulled from the Milgauss), etc. But hey, I love every piece of it. Hehe TGIF!
