Asking for a discount on SS from an AD these days.. is it mental?
It seems pretty normal to discuss negotiations with an AD (or at least it used to be). However, most of the more recent posts regarding these negotiations fall into the following buckets:
1.) "it's worth a shot to ask, the worst they can say is no" 2.) "you won't get a discount but you'll get free swag instead" 3.) "pay with cash, they *may* give you 3% if you're lucky" 4.) "in today's climate?? Not a chance. Instant blacklist as a matter of fact." Specifically, I'm on the list for a Polar Explorer II. It isn't the most popular SS watch in the catalogue but does that make it negotiable? I put down the deposit and told them that I have cash in hand so I'm sure they know I'm not beating around the bush. Plus, I'll actually be paying in cash. Does this give me enough leverage to try and squeeze a reasonable discount? |

I think if you’re dealing with a family owned AD you have a chance with cash. I ask every time.

Is this a joke?
There are a line of people excited to pay msrp + tax. I actually think you should buy used if you’re looking for a discount. By all means feel free to ask, but if you hear a chuckle don’t be surprised. |

I know someone who got 5% off a SS Rolex in the last month from a US AD. All he did was ask. |

Exactly they probably would change their minds and not even sell it at retail to you if you’d ask for a discount! Lol do you realize the state we are in?

My thoughts exactly. More shocking are the responses that are feeding into the asinine question Lol.

These days I never ask for a discount. My AD knows when they can and when they can’t. When they can they discount. Regardless though I pay what they tell me to. I think they appreciate that in this market I’m not haggling.

1.True
2.Maybe 3.Cash is an inconvenience to big shops, it actually costs them money to bank it, plus the hassle of actually dealing with large amounts. 4.No |

That would be burning Bridges with the AD. They have secured you one and then you have the audacity to ask for a discount?
Demand and supply. If the balance tipped and they had to move the piece then it's possible. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

THIS. I wouldn’t ask for a discount on a SS piece. I’m friends with a sales rep at an AD and I feel comfortable asking if he can discount the rose gold GMT CHNR. He simply said “bro, we can’t even discount solid gold pieces”. True? Idk. But if demand is so high today, they aren’t required to discount. Some do, some don’t. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It’s a sellers market right now for Rolex. So, the chances are slim. No harm in asking though.

Don’t ask on a stainless sport model (or any other allocation piece), but definitely ask on PM and datejusts.

Be prepared to be happy and pay full retail in this market... you will enjoy the whole experience of buying from AD more. Rather then just thinking about negotiations the whole time in the store. Drink lots of champagne to make up for the discount you would have got 2-3 years ago! Enjoy your new watch when it comes

Just a little negotiating tip...the time to go for a discount is before you agree to buy something and put down a cash deposit. They know you are not only going to buy the watch at full price but pay cash.

I’d actually say in the current climate it can be detrimental to relationship (especially when a steel sports piece)

An Explorer II might not be the most in-demand watch- but it is still in more demand than the vast majority of whatever the AD has. They can sell any one in an hour if they want; if you're going to ask for a discount, you probably shouldn't do so without any leverage (and finding leverage against a Rolex AD is tougher than finding a Rolex at a Goodwill shop).

I think you will be kindly guided by the sales assistant at time of purchase something like Rolex stipulates all there stores sell at the same retail price and would be careful not to press the subject, I was happy to pay full price for my watch.

I've given up asking for a discount on SS. Will only ask on PM models now. Every time you are denied a discount but still buy the watch I think will diminish your chance of getting a good discount in future.

If you don't ask you don't get. You should always ask but be prepared to pay the MSRP. If a discount is not on the cards, some other goodies may be thrown in. In the current climate the likelihood of obtaining a discount on the price is essentially zero. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't ask.
I got a discount on the Bluesy I brought last November. The previous three they sold had gone for MSRP because the buyers hadn't even thought to ask for a discount. That's a trend which should not be followed, even if you pretty much know the outcome. |

ADs are so on the look out for flippers and bad actors that I just wouldn't risk it or looking like a rube.
