dress watches dead? rolex only way to go?

I read recently that dress watches are dead, that work is more casual, and people want a watch that can be worn dress or casual. Hence, smart watches, etc. But also SS watches that are "sports".

Is this the permanent trend? Sales of suits are apparently way down in the last few years.

I do NOT think Dress watches are dead at all.

There are companioningies that make watches that are far less sparty than the Rolex range and they seem to be doing fine.

Patek Philippe
JLC
Vacheron
IWC
Lange
to mention just a few.

Dead? Not a chance.

With anything whatever is trending gets the spotlight. That’s all. And can yield market fluctuation.

Similarly - just because suit sales were down doesn’t mean people don’t wear them anymore.

Grand Seiko does a nice job of having one foot it the dress zone but still sporty, like this Titanium SBGR305.

Clearly people dress more casual but I think most should have the need for one "not a Rolex sport" watch.

Great watch

I wear my dress watches far more than my sport watches over the last several years.

As far as the casual dress of employees nowadays, I’ll opt for the suit and pension over the tshirts and free snacks career path.

Hmmm ... usually when an employer gives free snacks and lets you wear sandals to work ... it’s because you have skills they can’t risk going out the door. And comp now beats future pensions that can be taken away.

I’ll take a pension when I can work 30 hour a week and do the other 10 hrs in 30 years.

But I do love that GS.

That’s my move Monday-Friday most of the time. Work in tech, Jeans, casual long sleeve and tennis shoes.

The right dress watch can actually make the more casual jeans and t-shirt seem up scale. More casual clothes for work doesn’t necessarily mean looking trashy or not put together. A YG watch on black strap, clean dial, and minimal complications would seem a bit much for jeans and t-shirt, but there are many watches on the dressy end that would look great.

Among the serious watch collectors and enthusiasts larger, sportier watches have always been more desirable.

Without a doubt Submariner is the 1st watch among these people... but I suspect DateJust 36mm has been the most popular Rolex model ever... and you rarely see it around our "WIS" circles.

It's just that you get a wrong impression of the "big picture" here.

All are discontinued now, mine has been for a few years. The dial is special.

Very versatile watch. I’ve considered adding the blue dial and still might.

Beautiful watch indeed. You don't see them everyday. I believe the Gondolo line was named after a Brazilian retailer. Mr. Goldberger talks about that here.

Things are def moving more casual, esp with the dominance of tech and the Facebooking of offices/work-spaces, I think tech is becoming the new oil and needs to be taxed/harnessed for the masses who are going to be replaced.
