Brand New Oyster Perpetual 39 vs Pre Owned Explorer 1

lets say you had about 6k to spend. Would you rather get a pre owned explorer 1 or a brand new Oyster Perpetual 39 at a AD.

Thoughts?

I say Explorer I all day. The OP is pretty vanilla. Unless that’s what you’re after.

Personally I love the air king, however a lot of people don't, if the air king isn't your style, I would still stick to the explorer 1, I feel like the colored accents on the OP will get old and if you're going to get the black version might as well get the explorer. Also it depends if i get box and papers and how much warranty you have left on the second hand explorer 1

I am not a fan of the OP. I looked at them yesterday at an AD and they had a case full of them. I prefer the Explorer and it's looks and history.

I used to say Explorer. Recently tried OP black on. It has sub burst dial, and is much cleaner. I would say the Explorer is just slightly more versatile, but OP is much better looking in person. My opinion has changed. Id go black OP!

I had no intention of buying a black dialed OP 39mm. When I saw this one in person I bought it on the spot.

Looks great! Will be adding soon as I have to decide if I want to unload bb58 for it.

Few more points to OP.. in theory the Exp is more versatile, but we are not comparing a Sub to a Cellini here. The difference is minimal. Both options work 99.99999 the same in this regard. Just because 10/10 people will say one is more versatile doesn’t mean that the other is not. The OP can be dressed up and down just as well. The bracelet on Exp is useful to some, was NOT to me. Adding multiple mm makes it too big when engaged... A mm or 2 would help but the easy link was a waste of my time. If it is something you needed, it can be sourced for relatively cheap. In terms of history, IMO this goes to the OP as this watch was worn to Mt Everest, not Explorer. The Explorer was created after the fact. One major disadvantage is the value retention, as Explorer will always win this battle (many do care about this).

Probably the OP39. Either that or save some more for a new explorer.

When it comes to certain things, I get nervous about buying preowned

Watches is one of those things. Specially luxury watches.

I swim with my watches. I’d probably prefer the new watch from an AD.

No wrong or right here, but my preference is the Ex1.

I think the OP also doesn’t have a flip lock on the clasp which shouldn’t be a deal breaker but something to consider.

I would go for the Explorer. Both watches have history, however I see less explorers on wrists in the public than Oyster Perpetuals. The OP39 is a solid option if you must have new vs. used.

Maybe consider what else is in your collection, and what else do you plan on buying in the future?

I looked at both recently myself, but decided on the White OP 39. Although there's little to choose between the two, ultimately I plan on adding a Submariner to my collection. I feel the Sub is too similar to the Explorer, with the black dial, handset style and both being sports professional models. If I didn't plan on getting the Sub, then I'd have likely gone for the Explorer.

Had a new Explorer and sold it. Thinking of buying a white OP now. I would say, personally, white OP > Explorer >> all other OPs.

The OP39 Black dial can be a watch forever. Everyone I know that has had the Explorer has sold it, however both are very nice.

Is this your first piece? Really depend on your current collection.

If I had 6k I wouldn’t even consider either of those 2 pieces to be honest. But if I must pick one, it would be the OP39 which has way more color option and bigger diameter.
