New Rolex Advice - Dilema
Hi Guy's - I could really do with some advice.
I have just been given my first rolex, a ss black sub [no date]. Absolutely beautiful. My g-friend bought it for me and she paid top price (£3400). Its still boxed up new. She' agreed with the jewller that I can exchange or upgrade. My main concern is that the watch will drop dramatically in value because they are the most common and because of the top price paid. Instead I was thinking of upgrading to: 1) A ss black sub [date] - not my first option but are these more sought after 2) A ss green sub [date] - I quite like this and think it might hold it's value better 3) The sea dweller. [Not the deep sea] - Are these still made by rolex? 4) Finally the Green crystal milguass - Again not my first option due to the elevated prices of these at the moment and that its more of a dress watch. My priorities are a beautiful watch that will hold it's value. It is something I will be wearing on a daily basis. I don't want to shed a tear everytime I look at my wrist knowing that £100's are dropping out of my wallet. Thanks so much in advance. ps. My watch wasn't ticking in its box and then last night i took it out to look at it and it started ticking. What did I do and can I stop it. |

Well the only upgrade in most of the watches you stated is a date function the non date Sub is a Rolex icon and hold prices well in the market. The LV Sub and SD all have same movement so its basically down to choice.Myself dont buy a watch looking at the resale value I buy a watch because I like it.But all Rolex hold there price well in the market but with Rolex now making almost 1000000 watches a year. Its hard to say what will retain its value perhaps the LV Subs or SD.All the Rolex line you could wear on a daily basis for decades to come with just a service every 5-7 years will last you a life time. The reason your watch started to tick is quite simple, its a automatic and has a weighted winding pendulum. As you move your watch, wrist, arm etc its winds watch. There is a winding crown as well when you first wear your watch give 40 full crown turns to fully wind watch. You cannot over wind it a slipping clutch prevents that, if you want it to stop just don't wear it will stop on its own.

Keep it
Why don't you make your girlfriend so proud and happy and keep the watch? It is a beautiful watch. Who cares what happens to VALUE? Value is only relevant if you are going to sell it. Tell her you thought about upgrading, but this gift, from her, is special.

I have never worried about re-sale value on a gift before. I think you should wear it and enjoy it for what it is...an absolutely iconic Rolex that was given to you buy someone who cares for you. I cant imagine re-sale value being the first thing in my mind after receiving anything as a gift.

As for the ticking, you must have wound the main spring slightly from the motion of taking it out of the box. If you're desperate to keep it stopped, unwinding the crown and pulling it out to the first position should stop it from moving at all. |

Welcome to TRF. The above is good advice. I bought my Rolex on the basis that I liked it. There is a secondary benefit that it is likely that Rolexs will hold their values better than most other watches so that if you wished to trade it in the future you could. If you're going to wear it regularly, like myself, then go for the one that sings to you and you also have the personal value that it was a gift. Which ever one you end up with you will have a great watch I can assure you.

I would not change it. If given to me I would hang on to it for ever..........
If you want another type/style get it but make your girlfriend happy by bringing out your "special" watch on special occasions. |

You are fortunate to have a girlfirnd that loves you enough to make such a purchase and can afford such a purchase. If i were you young man, i would romance the hell out of her for such a fine gift. Keep the Sub ND, its value will hold , Girlfreinds come and go but a |Rolex is for life. Now say thank you to her, tell her you love her, and that she looks good in that dress, and be happy . You have a watch that most people dont have or could afford.

You're crazy dude. Keep the sub nd. Over the long haul it's probably the coolest of those options anyway.

And also 100's are gonna be falling out of your wallet soon anyway with worldwide inflation. The rolex will hold its value better than common stock so just enjoy the darn thing.

Hello & welcome
If I were you I would a) be delighted and b) keep it forever The ND Sub is a direct link to the original Subs, and as such rather special imho. If it is discontinued in the next couple of years, then you will have even less to worry about in terms of retained value. Cheers

The REAL value is making your girlfriend feel like she got you a gift you love and not one you're putting a resale value on. Shame.

Decide which one YOU like the best and get that one. Forget about value unless you never plan on wearing it and treat it as an investment 100% (which does not make much sense). Enjoy!

Keep it. A lot of people feel that the Submariner with the scoc printing on the dial will be a fairly short run and may become the most collectible of any of the current subs down the road.

i dont understand why this is even a discussion. returning a gift like that is like asking someone to give you back a gift you had given them earlier, totally improper
if you wanted a resale value watch, use your own money not someone else's, you got the watch for free so any resale is profit to you! |

I would like to think that your super considerate GF probably spent hours at the jeweler picking this one out based on a whole bunch of factors that she sweated over...
I would keep it like the others have said here (not because I have a ND version myself) but I think the emotional value makes it irreplaceable... the ND version is actually less common...and the MSRP is a $500 less (approx.) than the date version...that price difference is less on the secondary market...I would not even worry about resale...

Keep it. As others have said, the no date sub is already an iconic watch. More importantly, I have found the value of a Rolex is not so much the actual watch but the story behind it and you already have one helluva story.

If your gonna wear it everyday. I say get the SS sub date.
Its a classic that never goes out of stlye. I wouldnt worry to much about the watch losing value. If its your everyday watch, you want something that you love and feels comfortable on your wrist as a top priority. Good luck! Tom |

You're absolutely right! It was a terrible choice. Send the watch to me immediately, then you can buy the one you want and all will be well.
