Do Rolexes have "souls?" Spiritual TRF members only.
Do Rolexes have "souls?" The Japanese have a concept of "kami" where inanimate objects have a spiritual force. Some "things" have more kami than others: ie Mount Fuji versus a pencil. Now we can attribute the Rolex brand aura to marketing, but do you think there is something more to Rolexes? I mean when I see a Rolex, the lights go dim and a spotlight goes on the watch. Everything goes quiet, as if I'm in another demention. Not totally, but I hope you get my extended metaphor. For most of us, you can put a
6k Rolex next to a 20K VC or PP (with thier polished movements et al) and the Rollie sings to us. To the non WIS, nothing stands out as much as a Rolex: it's as though you had the Holy Grail. |

some mystics claim that all matter has awareness/intelligence. your rolex does piggy-back off of you in terms of requiring your energy to work, so there is some part of you in it. is that 'soul'? i dunno.

I think owning a ROLEX is like having a pet
Owning a quartz is like looking after an appliance .................... Rob

Well, as a practicing Buddhist-no our watches have no soul. We are reborn as humans, animals, ghosts... depending on the good or bad karma we have accumulated through our lives. Only living things, not man made objects.

This is going to sound mixed, but here goes. Rolex is the Chivas Regal of watches. The best, right? No, not by a long shot. The best Scotchs' are McCallan, Bowmore, Springbank, and others you haven't heard of. The best watches are Patek, Audemars, Vacheron, and some others.
However, to give Chivas its due (and Rolex), there is an unmistakable iconic quality to it, and I think that's what you meant. It is quality, after all. But there is a lot of it; it isn't rare at all. But yes, it is good. And most recognize it, and like it. It's good, though not overly complex. And a bit expensive, but not ultra-expensive. Maybe it has a bit of soul. |

From the Catholic perspective, no inanimate matter has a soul; only living things possess a material soul (and only human beings a rational and immortal soul).

Well I believe in positive and negative energy and how both affect/effect you life. A watch isn't living but all the materials that went into the watch do come from the earth. What I do know is people look at you and respond differently when you have a Rolex on your wrist!!!

What makes a world class watch movement so incredible is that it can do what it does without being alive and having a soul.

I am not spiritual, but I must say there's something about the complication. I like listening to it and I love the sound of it changing date.

No, they are material objects.
Very nice material objects, of course, but material objects all the same. Only living things have souls. Jeannie |

So you keep your watches in your drawers at night? Guess that answers the question, boxers or briefs? Brings new menaing to the statement, "hey Zemina roll over here and and tell me the time". |

I think to suggest that a Rolex has "a soul" is really pushing the envelope. Believe me, I in no way oppose spirituality as it applies to humans, but to attempt to assign a spiritual quality to an inanimate object is going way too far (IMO).

Interesting question...
I'm not sure they have a soul per se. However, you have touched upon a more metaphysical aspect of timepieces.
One of the most famous arguments for the existence of God was put forth by the British philosopher William Paley. Known as the "watchmaker analogy." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Paley I believe watches are one of our greatest achievements; an instrument to measure something nearly unquantifiable: time itself. It's synchronicity and operation a tiny model of the universe... If you are in London I highly suggest a visit to the Royal Guildhall, home to a vast library of information about London's ancient and numerous guilded professions. Therein lies the clock museum, maintained by the "Worshipful Company of Clockmakers" Guild. What a profound name! As you wander among these ancient timepieces/clocks they will toll their hours, just as they have for hundreds of years...just like my Rolex will. A soul? I don't know. But there is something alive in the ticking of any timepiece! Cheers!

Rolex watches are a great thing to have and enjoy, but are just material things that comes and go, but only human beings have souls.

They are mechanical devices, yes, with their own particular temperaments, but they are machines.

I am a cardiac sonographer...
and I enjoy having a mechanical - beating movemnt; call it like having a "heart" inside. Its like the heart inside of you. Its in balance as should you be; out of balance and you wind up on a bed with me scanning your heart looking for troubled valves or chambers. So the reality of the mechanical mvmt being precise and in balance has a certainty of physicality which I relate to and enjoy...
Thanks, Randy |
