Joker

Anyone see it?

We just got back. It was a truly impressive movie. In a day where CGI, action and marketing rule the box office, this movie was exceptionally well written and produced.

And the acting?

I’d never even imagined anyone could beat Heath Ledger as the Joker. But Joaquin Phoenix did just that. I imagine he will win every award he is up for. This wasn’t just good acting. This was a masterpiece.

Impressive is an understatement.

I highly recommend this movie.

I’ll see it eventually!

I still remember Cesar Romero as the Joker!

Dang Seth. Thanks for this. I was awaiting someone to talk about it on the forums since I was 50/50 on seeing it. I agree, Heath did a great job as the Joker and I think he was the highlight from that franchise. I was worried it was going to be a movie to try to compete with it and maybe horribly done (like all the Spider-Man movies, remakes of the classics, etc). But, if you say it's worth seeing, maybe I should go....

It is as different from that franchise as you could imagine.

It’s not action of any sort. It’s rather sad and more of a drama than anything. But it’s a work of art. Truly.

I believe you will love it.

I'm excited to eventually see this movie. From the time I first saw the trailer I knew it would be a great film.

I understand it to be a very dark and violent dissent into madness with nary a superhero to come to anyone’s rescue.

An excellent, albeit brief, synopsis.

That hits the nail on Thad exactly. The decent into madness is sad to but in the context of the character it makes perfect sense. I as hoping for a few more ever eggs in there from the franchise, but all in all a very good flick. I'm interested to see if a sequel comes around with the Jokers rise through the criminal underworld.

I very much hope so.

Except that this movie was super hard on Phoenix. Can’t imagine him being able to do another.

I agree that many not liking it are likely not enjoying the sad fact that our society and we as people have a hand in creating some of the criminal element of our world.

This movie was nothing short of genius.

But to lament the violence in this movies vs John Wick or the thousands of other similar movies is typical societal hypocrisy.

Even though I have yet to see this movie, it is very likely representative of the reality of many people in the world who become monsters after being the proverbial "cigarette butt" constantly crushed under everyone's heel. A man can only take so much abuse before the mind snaps, IMO.

Agree.

Believe me, it’s hard not to empathize with his character. Seeing “how” he became the Joker was super interesting.

And for certain I was rooting for him at the end. Not the angry mobs per say, but the individual for sure.

Looking forward to seeing it but have a bit of comic overload having watched most of the MCU films this summer, I'm now on an anti-hero kick and enjoying The Boys.

“The Boys” is excellent. I thought that series was extremely well done.

I am very much looking forward to the Joker. Unfortunately the wife is out of town so I probably will have to wait; not sure I’d win Father of the year taking a 9 and 5 year old to see it.

It’s violent — not for kids. Age 16 and up. Batman is not in it.

Yeah. Probably not for him.

It’s not action and super dark and violent.

I can’t wait to see this - it looks very dark, but in a good way. I’m glad that they took this character in this direction; and hell of a choice for the actor portraying him; always liked Joaquin Phoenix.

an inaccurate and unkind comparison. block her number

I'm planning on seeing this today. tons of movies with "bad guys" but very few on how bad guys are formed. I have a sense why lots of people hate this movie -- the idea of any shared societal responsibility for the creation of the sick, deranged, and violent. Bad reviews rolling in from the likes of Slate, the New Yorker, and the Guardian

Funny I was watching the Loudest Voice, Russell Crowe is excellent, and the Boys, two very different genres, and yet both have a similar storyline with a new young blonde being taken advantage of, this theme is so universal it is scary.
