Anyone read the article in the recent PP magazine about the 5520P? I am not fan of it from an aesthetic standpoint at all but wow, what an amazing piece of mechanical engineering!

I love the watch but since even the 5524 is too big for my puny wrist, I can forget about this one, not to mention the price.

I liked the watch at launch...love the function but less enthusiastic about the extra pushers.....I saw it in the metal and was kinda meh

Yeah, I think it would be very hard to wear and do not like the pilot to begin with. But the mechanicals are really impressive. Zero chance I could spend 200K on a watch but still quite a piece of mechanical kit.

At that price point, I would not buy this and honestly don't understand an alarm on a mechanical watch, especially if it can't even be precise down to the minute!

At anything more than the 5524, I'm buying the 5524 instead of this. At this price point, I am buying an RM for sure.

To each their own and I do not personally like the aesthetics of this particular watch, just appreciate the mechanics. That said, I was in Austin last weekend for the F1 race and saw some guy wearing a RM Bonbon (assume it was real) and I find all of those RM's completely unattractive. Plenty of options at this sort of price point but I do not think most prospective buyers for this are looking at RM as well.

For sure , what one is willing to spend on anything is always subjective to that person. For my lifestyle, I'd love an RM for its ruggedness and its overall sporty ascetics, especially as a stealthy all black watch or one with a ton of color. I'd love a McLaren orange one or an all white one like Bubba Watson.

An alarm on a mechanical watch is no different to a chrono...use your stop watch function in a phone...we buy these type of watches for the horological or engineering accomplishments...I also hardly find a RM a "stealth" watch....but as collectors we respect each others choices

This is one of the best new references Patek has produced in modern times. The alarm function although has been made in other more complicated references, has not been utilized before in a reference by itself. I have the opportunity to own this particular watch and it is simply stunning!
All I know is there are not that many produced...

Totally get your point, I own a lot of very expensive watches that are inferior to an iPhone at performing those tasks. However, I think the chrono and time keeping ability of a mechanical watch is much closer in ability to a digital (cheaper) competitor than the 15-minute increment alarm on the 5520p is to a true alarm clock. And they are essentially pricing the alarm complication as a $100,000 option to the 5524, and that is even assuming it costs 50k to upgrade from WG to Platinum. I'd really be interested in the decision of why it was 15 minute increments or why they couldn't achieve taking it down to the minute. I am not an alarm expert, or a fan if you can't tell :), so is this the standard on other alarms?

Once you have gone past the "alarm function" and start viewing this function as a "learner minute repeater" it may make more sense....just like u have never used a chrono...whether to time my eggs boiling or lap around the garden...I am a frequent traveller that is anal enough to also take a digital clock with me apart from.my phone....I fret about waking up.late and thus phone and wake up call are a prerequisite....a GMT with an alarm is just perfect...I also tend to wake on the half hours and yet to set my alarm for 5:07!!!! So sure u can get a JLC to do that but then why buy a PP WT if u can get a JLC one cheaper???? I think a MR is also.pretty useless....but I would.like one. I think a WT is pretty unreliable (legibility and daylight saving) so I love the function, why pay a huge premium for a PC when an AC will do the job with limited additional.incinvenience - because the engineering required is fascinating.....so I guess this is natural.progression......yes it does look like a crab....yes I was originally interested but then we all get carried Way with baselworld euphoria....so it's a function I would.like but perhaps not in that model.....and I did like the look of your old 5170G

Vulcan makes a good alarm watch. Not sure what the cost is but I'm guessing less than 200K.

I tried one on and got a “lesson” at the Geneva Boutique a few weeks ago. It’s an impressive timepiece. I’m admittedly biased since I love my 5524g, although the extra pusher does change the aesthetic.

When reviewers must spend more time on the innards, and excusing the 4 satellite antennae on the case, you know it’s a model that isn’t elegant in the way PP has gained its fame.

If the bulk of the talk is mixed with reasons why it is hard to love, then it ought to be a rarely seen PP some 40 years from now. Maybe a safe queen for future appreciation?

This watch continues to allude me, they're not making many and I suspect Patek won't sell it for long. It's a powerhouse packed into an irreverent case, the only thing not to love is the price.

Having ordered the watch at baselworld the euphoria of buying anything that "tick tocks" seems to have passed. I sold the 5524G as I had an issue with the pushers and then I go order a watch with double the amount!!! I am delighted that from a UK perspective the allocation chances are close to zero!!! I can now focus on something a bit more achievable for a 2020 delivery....

I told my daughter a month ago that when she thinks she’s got to have a material possession wait a month or two before buying it. Because then she won’t want it anymore and will have saved a bunch of money.
