For the market price of a new ceramic Daytona

One can get the following new watches: (also for market prices)
  • JLC Reverso classic small seconds
  • Rolex Submariner 114060
  • Omega Speedmaster 1861 hesalite
  • And to round it all off a Zenith El Primero.
This would be a dream collection for any wis. You would have a watch for any occasion. In my opinion, nobody in their right mind would look at this collection and say "I would trade this all for a Daytona". I guess desire makes people irrational.

The only watch in your list that makes sense to own is the Rolex sub. IMO

All of the (others) are easy to get....for a reason....and they lose value over time...try to sell and recoup your money..hardly.

The Daytona is on a different level. Some understand and some don’t.....the ones that don’t... should wear something else...and stop bad rapping others that enjoy their Daytona.

And this is what ruined this hobby the last few years. Value and retention.

You buy a luxury item because you can and enjoy something. I understand the value proposition behind it, but that should be one of the last on the list.

Buy because you love it, else don't. Talking about value and all that takes the joy out of it.

You let what others do ruin the hobby for you...

Nothing wrong with people looking at resale value as part of their decision to make a luxury purchase, and that includes a watch purchase. You don’t like it...then don’t do it. I look at all of my expensive purchases with resale as a part of my equation. ie. Cars, homes etc.

I am truly sorry to hear this, as I suspect "resale value" is the main, if not only, part of your equation.

To each his own.

I buy smart so I have never over spent but the end goal is not making money on this or actually ever selling any of my watches. And if the market crashes and the value of my watches go to 0, I won't care in the end. I'll buy a few more.

Daytona’s are some of the most sought after watches especially the 116500.
As rightly said they are on another level on all respects.
It’s human nature if people cannot get something ie Daytona ,they will immediately condemn then suddenly they acquire and it’s the best thing ever..
A bad case of jealousy and sour grapes I’m afraid.
What makes me laugh are the people who are belly aching that they don’t even want or like the Daytona. If that’s the case, shut up and buy a Casio and do us all a favour.

To the OP -

If you really wanna stir up the pot, dump a beautiful Platinum Daytona AND sweet Patek 5960 for one of these like I did.

Let the whining and insults and admonishment begin!

Awesome move on my part!

Sure? But it isn't a Daytona now is it?

If a person wants a Daytona, then the goal is a Daytona.

It's not about quantity, you can also buy 200 Seiko 5's which deserves it's own merits.

Keep the four, I'd pick the Daytona.

This is exactly why I bought four bicycles instead of a car.

In hindsight I could have had eight unicycles but didn't want to take it too far.

Yeah because comparing luxury watches is the same as comparing bicycles. Not really but thanks anyway.

You should get those watches, if you like them and forget about the Daytona. Why is it necessary to spend what a Daytona costs. Why not a lot more or a lot less?

This is kind of the point I'm trying to make. Spending a lot of money on a Daytona because it's hard to get. BTW, the Daytona is a watch I would never buy.

Then why do you care what other people buy? Not everyone likes the same watches or wants four of something rather than one of something.

I'd take a Reverso small seconds in red heads-up vs. a Daytona. Yes, no bullshit.

I'm done buying shit because I think it is more likely to hold its value. I end up not wearing them-- not because I'm trying to preserve value, but because I just don't really like them enough.

I was in 10 meetings this week-- Subs, Omegas, and Daytonas galore. Yawn.

Blue Reverso popped from under the cuff of someone and I can't shake how drawn I was to it. Completely sick. I never talk about watches at work, with clients, counterparties, etc... but I almost felt compelled to say "nice".

If you want those watches then I guess it makes sense. But if you want a Daytona, get a Daytona. I can appreciate, and like, all of the watches on that list, I don't actually want to buy one.

You can also say that instead of a 5711, you can get a DaytonaC in both colors, plus those four watches you listed.

Why does it shock people that many, if not most, buy Rolex because it generally retains value? This is one of the biggest reasons it is so popular. Maybe not why for people on this forum but out in the real world it is.

Because that wasn't always the case. Not even 10 years ago you could buy them at "greys" for less than MSRP. And used definitely below retail
