Current Gen Sub and Sub-Date

With the cavet that the Submariner is an icon and will always be desirable, would the current gen 116610 and 116610LN become less desirable if it is discontinued and Rolex releases a new Submariner with a new movement and increased power reserve and maybe moving away from the maxicase?

I honestly don’t see how they can change the Sub further other than updating the movement. I believe the next gen will look the same, and they will probably stick with maxicase. It will be like moving from 116719blro to 126719blro

Have to agree. When they launched the new versions of the GMT, with updated movements, on the maxi case, they comitted the subs to them as well, imo.

Nobody knows, really. It depends on the perspective.

Some say, gazillion of current gen Subs were made, they will never be worth much more than what they are worth now. Others say, the current gen will be called "fat boy" or whatever of those "cool names", and will go to history as the fattest Sub once they trim down those lugs on the upcoming model so it will raise in the value in the future.

Yeah, but the real question is, will they be more desirable because they were discontinued? Older subs have gone up in value at least partly because all Rolexes have gone up in value. With that inflation removed, would they still have increased in value?

The six-digit sub was made by the millions and won't patinate to drive a vintage market. So, it's not scarce, it won't do anything interesting over time (that we know of), and it'll likely be at least a little inferior to the new model. That's not a recipe for big value gains just because of being discontinued, at least once the newer ones become more widely available after the initial rush.

Remember, older subs were relatively inexpensive until just recently when you couldn't find the current model in stores. In a more plentiful market, the retail price of a superior watch would cap the value of older models.

We have no idea what future collectors will find desirable. Patina is not always a desirable trait for people, and is actually a deterrent to many buyers (myself included).

If Rolex updates the sub, they still won’t ramp up production. They’ll continue to be scarce, while sub demand isn’t going to go anywhere but up. Not to mention steady price increases through the coming years.

History shows subs hold value. Subs of all ages, models, and era’s are desirable, going back many decades. Will a standard sub make you rich? No. But that’s not really the point of it, is it?

My prediction is similar to the GMT update, minus the bracelet change. New movement, tiny crown at 6 o clock on the dial, and an almost indiscernible slimming of the lugs.

I love my SubDate. I don’t like the new Sub with the Maxi case. I prefer the traditional style.

I bet they will update the movement, put a cornett on the dial in between swiss & made, and throw a 2 into the ref number.

I would love to see something drastically different like a different color scheme but I am highly doubtful that will happen.

When they finally change the movement they could make a small minor change just for the sske of making it look upgraded on the outside to go along with it's new re-introduction. The 114060 shouldn't lose any value but could show a slight gain and will keep up with inflation at least. The 3130 movement is such a proven engine that it will always have a following and hold good value.

If Rolex were to release a new model Sub/Subdate it would probably end up as unobtainable and once again fall into the hands of the Greys.

This would increase the prices of all the older discontinued models.

It’s a big if though.
