Questions in regards to Calatrava
Hi guys,
Does anyone know the story behind the Calatrava name...I have seen it used by sellers on other watch brand as well, often referred to as a “Calatrava case”. When another brand is referred to “Calatrava” does it then mean that the case resembles the Calatrava case by PP or is Calatrava simply an established watch industry term for a special case form? |

Interesting question. I found the following on the web:
The Calatrava Cross was the pre-eminent symbol among the Iberian orders of Knighthood in Spain and Portugal. The roots of this particular cross can be traced back to the 12th century Military Order of Calatrava, which was founded in Castile (present day Spain) as a military branch of the great Cistercian family. By Paul Harding, with thanks to Sean Wright for his inspiration Maybe someone else can clarify how it became the emblem of Patek Philippe? |

The Calatrava takes its name from the ornate Calatrava cross, the cruciform symbol first used on the marching banners of the Calatrava knights who defended the Calatrava fortress against the Moors in 1158. This same symbol was registered as a trademark, alongside Patek Philippe & Cie, on April 27th, 1887, although it only started appearing more regularly on the crowns and movements of Patek Philippe watches from the 1960’s onwards. The use of the Calatrava name for this collection gives an indication of its significance to the brand, and indeed it has played a major role ever since.

Thanks for your input. In your opinions, are other brands using the Calatrava name for a watch case that resembles the Patek Calatrava case or is “Calatrava case” something that is widely used for a certain type of watch case in the watch industry? (Independent from Patek)
Like the watches in my EBay links that I posted earlier... |

Even PP itself refers to a calatrava case when describing the 5327. But it doesnt appear to consider it part of the Calatrava line or does it?
