SS Daytona "M" vs "V"

Questions for SS Daytona expert.

Are the "M" series and "V" series identical?

If not, what are the difference between the two? Believe it or not, my local AD have no idea.

TIA

They are identical..

It's just a number, and they are making both; so there is no way to tell if any single number (M or V) is "fresher" than another.

Larry, as long as we're on this line of discussion, is the only difference between my Z and the M/V series the new clasp? The reason I ask is because of the laser(?) etching on the side of the case of a new Daytona I saw at an AD. Is that permanent? Or a sticker? Or... ?

There is no real difference other than production date. The V series are newer production. The main difference comes in the clasp.

78490- Old Clasp
78590- New clasp

Is it true that they are still making both? My AD today offered me an M with the newest clasp which apparently just came in - I'm a bit dubious about it!

Yes..........they are still making both.. it's in the math..

The "M" release only came out in 2008, and the "V" release was first seen in late 2008, barely 6 months later and likely as the number of "Z" cases began to reach a certain (unknown) number on hand, so.........These two prefixes are being produced concurrently..... And perhaps there are Z serials still being produced of some models.

Remember, serial numbers are spread throughout the entire Rolex line, not just the watch on your wrist. Some probably run through their allotted serial numbers before others that don't move so fast.... So, a Z series White Gold Daytona may be newer than a V series GMT II...... and perhaps the very next serial number after yours is on a Ladies Pearlmaster.

Both "M"s and "V"s have been seen with the latest clasp change..

I believe that is a sticker. I say this because, I purchased up my V series SS last week, it had what appeared to be a laser marking on the side, however, when I received my pride and joy in the mail (avoided paying taxes) there was no laser sticker to be found, so I assume the AD took it off. Can someone confirm?

The reason I am asking is because someone told me that if you can find an "M" series to your local AD, they still sell it for the old price of $9200.00.

It would be up to the AD on how much they would want to sell a "M" series for. They can sell it for the old price or the new price. There is nothing that states on how much they have to sell anything for.

Yes its only a AD stock identification plastic sticker.
When you say 'not perishable'
I have read posts claiming that the oils will deteriorate, migrate from the surfaces, congeal, etc etc, even on a watch that is not used so would a 6 year old 'new' Rolex need a service because the oils might not be doing their thing?

This is pretty cool, I hadn't noticed that until this post. Thanks. Mine is also a V series, cool to see the serial number etched there as well.

some M have the old (better) clasp, and some have the new clasp...the V have the new clasp

AD suck because if they had an M at 9200 and they price increase occurred, they jacked up the price to 9925, even though they owned it back of the 9200 price

grey market is they way to go

Handdo, why is the old clasp better? Just wondering since I haven't had a chance to compare them.

I just purchased a V serial from my Ad, it has old clasp. You will find M and V serials with bold old and new clasp.
I personally prefer smaller clasp (old).

Interesting. My new V series has the new clasp. Didn't know they made the V with the old.

One advantage the new clasp has over the old that I really like: the new clasp has the extra link you can adjust under the clasp on the fly. This is one feature of the new clasp I love. You can loosen the bracelet about 1.5-2mms on the fly.

Connoisseur, the M series I slapped on my wrist with the old clasp on comes with the 'on the fly' adjuster as well.

Randy, other than the 'channel' in the clasp, you mean to say that the buckle is different as well? Is it shorter or longer?

Actually my M class Daytona has the old clasp with the hole while my GMTIIC that I got eight months before the Daytona has the channel clasps. Go figure.

Oh and I got the information from Randy's post that the old clasp my be preferable since its smaller. That is true. Since my wrist is only 6.5 inches, it will probably fit me better if I ever get a chance to get it sized. Its been sitting in its box for months now.

My GMTIIC fits well since you can move the 12 o clock links over to the six.

Roderich, yes, the older clasp is shorter than the new one.
