Suggestion for a dress watch please
Hi all, I currently own a Sub but would like a nice Dress watch as a second watch. I wear my Sub out swimming, biking, working, everyday stuff ...but I would like to get a dress watch for those special occasions. Yes I could probably wear my Sub for those occasions but I would like suggestions for a nice dress watch, any pics of you wearing your dress watch are appreciated. Thanks in advance

Something thin, time-only (maybe even just a two hander), in PM and on leather.
If you want Rolex, maybe a Cellini. But do check out brands like ALS (saxonia), PP (calatrava), JLC (master ultra thin), Seiko (Grand Seiko), and FPJ (souverain). |

What price range are you looking at? Under 15K, I would look at JLC.

Suggestion to buy used, especially with JLC or VC, is that resale is relatively poor, so more more bang for your buck with pre-owned. What color dial and hands? Case material? That could help with suggestions to consider. Lange makes some absolutely beautiful watches. And IWC Portugiesers look great. |

Reverso in SS
Lange Saxonia or 1815 time only Patek calatrava From cheapest to most expensive, and you can’t go wrong with any

Nice, but it is not a dress watch.

Fair enough. If I needed a true dress watch I would get a preowned Patek Calatrava. Very reasonably priced for PM.

If barely used, a $6k budget can get an absolute stunner of a traditional manufacture dress watch. $15k is platinum territory.
New still offers a lot. Too many to list. But you’ll do much better nos or barely used. Example: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=733837 I’d just pick a favorite brand and go from there. Every brand that matters has one dress watch in their catalog. |

Dress watch.
* Keep it simple. Time only / no date. * 39mm or less * <10mm thick. * on leather * preowned as most do not hold their value in the current sports watch market. Those are my general suggestions.exceptions can be made but a good starting point. As others have mentioned JLC has many Interesting offerings. The resale is typically poor. Patek Calatrava are nice but uninspiring and their manual Calatrava movements desperately need updating imho. Cartier has options worth considering, resale also weak. Lots of vintage options, you don’t have to spend a lot to get a fantastic looking timeless watch... the biggest obstacle here is your wrist size as many of the older watches are 36mm. Great size for a dress watch provided your wrists are not massive. Remember a similar size dress watch wears bigger than a sports watch because there is more dial real estate.

Excellent advice! I also don’t like complications on a dress watch so no date and no subdials. A second hand is ok to me. JLC has some amazing dress watches. I wanted something larger than traditional and love my Zenith Elite 6150 bought new for a great price, also didn’t want gold as I don’t wear it much at all. Even wearing suits all week I don’t need a true dress watch. I would probably get a a preowned JLC Ultra Thin in White Gold in your price range. There is a beauty on Chrono24. |

Lange Saxonia, Vacheron Patrimony, preowned PP Calatrava, the newly released JLC master series I found really stunning but the Reverso is obviously an icon for a reason, a gold Cartier tank or santos. These come to mind for me.

Another vote for ALS... this is mine (an 1815 Up/Down), although there are only 25 in the world of these. The non-LE might be doable within budget, though.
