Any lagotto romagnolo dog owners here?
After losing both our lab and pug about 2 years ago, our family is ready to add a new family member.
My wife and child are both highly allergic to basically everything (the dogs predated them both ;)). We’ve done a lot of research and it seems like a lagotto is a good fit for our family. This choice was made before we realized how hard they are to find! Can anyone give me feedback on this breed, or other medium sized hypoallergenic breeds we should consider. We aren’t really interested in doodles. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How about a Portuguese Water Dog? I have allergies & love dogs, PWDs are a great breed, people loving, affectionate, loyal, fun loving. I was owned by a PWD for 14 years.
Best dog ever!

Most terriers don't shed.
Ours are Sealyhams, but there are Jack Russells, Miniature Schnauzers, Wire Fox Terriers, Fox Terriers, Airedale lots of different ones..... |

I had never heard of a lagotto romagnolo.
A Bedlington may be a good alternative choice (you don’t have to clip them like the show dogs) and when left to grow naturally look a lot more like the dog you mention, but they're not as big. Jack Russels moult. We have a J Russel/poodle cross (Jackapoo) which are supposed to not moult – it does. |

only suggestion i'll offer is to make sure to pick the dog out of the litter in person, ie see how the dog's parents act, in terms are they calm, obedient, friendly etc, and making sure the pup is healthy
i bought one bird dog puppy from a breeder over the phone had the dog flown in and it came with kennel cough, which it gave to my other two dogs... but if your concern is shedding, a vizsla or wiemaraner is what i'd look a) very short haired, very intelligent and very human oriented b) and especially important much easier to find hope that helps some |

My best friend, she was a great dog! I miss her more than I miss being 10 years old.

Yes, our Obi will be 2 in July. We got him because my eldest has strong allergies, and he has had no issues with him.
![]() I’d share a photo, but I’ve reached my monthly Tapatalk limit and can’t figure out how to resize photos to upload directly to the forum. |

What a beauty! Any specifics about your dog’s demeanor and behavior?

If it is a allergy issue something as simple as a standard poodle would work. We have one that is 55 lbs that we rescued. Also have a 55lb AussieDoodle that we rescued. She does not shed either. I have allergy issues with animals and have no issues with these two ladies.

If you don't like doodles (I don't either) why don't you just get a poodle either standard or miniature?

Cairn Terrier is a good option. This guy is a big dog in a smaller dogs body.

My neighbors across the street have one. Its very friendly and plays with one of my dogs (lab) My Mastiff and King Charles cav dont get along with other dogs sadly. Ive had 2 Labs and the Lagotto reminds me a lot of a Lab but with out the childish behavior. They like having a job, playing with the family and overall have a good attitude. Having space seams to be an important aspect in this dogs behavior. Now i beleive that every dog has their own personality, while others are bread to carry certain personality traits. The trait i see them having over the lab is a more serious demeanor. Not saying it wont play, but its just not a goof ball 24/7 like a lab.
No idea if this helps |

There's no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.
And people who are allergic to cats and dogs can also be allergic to the proteins in their saliva that they deposit when they lick their coats. Research everything well before taking in and having to give up an animal. |

I’m allergic to dogs. I have three. They sleep with us. Two are “hypoallergenic”. Every single time I touch any of them, I need to wash my hands. If I don’t, I break out in hives and have other reactions such as my eyes itch and swell. At times, they set of my asthma pretty badly. I keep an inhaler on me at all times. It’s still worth it. I love my babies.

Cats I’m even worse.
It’s horrible. In my single days, I slept a girls house that had a cat. Almost died from one night. No joke. I had fluid in my lungs for days and my lips and ears swelled up like crazy. That pussycat was not worth it.
