Received my first Patek today but...

I took the plunge on a new 5170R (from AD) but the finishing on the hands can’t be right. The hands look smudged as if wiped with a dirty cloth.

The numerals also all have micro scratches under the loupe. I have contacted the AD already and have an appt Tuesday when they re-open.

The hour and minute hands do not have a perfectly mirror finish. They look dirty or scratched.

As a FYI, the case looks like there are micro scratches. To me it is not a mint watch but one that was shown alot or worst case it is preowned.

You might want to ask them for the story on this one...

Those hands almost look tarnished. Maybe this was a piece that was returned because of a flaw and then it was resold as new but had been opened up and exposed to air for too long maybe?

I don’t think so but if it is not pressure tested correctly then there could be exposure to external elements

That's my guess as well- exposed to air & humidity & for some time. (Maybe a bad crown gasket/seal?) Doesn't seem like it's possible it passed Geneva QC that way.

At any rate, I would demand (politely, but very firmly) a 100% return for full refund immediately. A reputable AD shouldn't give you a problem. How you'll get another one is the problem, but job #1 is getting the full refund for that one.

Where you present when this watch was first unsealed? As mentioned, the micro scratches in the case and bezel make it look like a preowned watch.

No, I wasn't there when it was unsealed. The micro scratches on the case don't bother me so much because they are inevitable. The hands and dial though should be pristine.

Agreed, watch should never have left the factory and this looks bad for the PP quality control dept.

Even though I don't agree with it all, PP watches are supposed to have higher levels of finishing and detail on their higher end pieces which this one I would consider. It's disappointing, PP really needs to step it up and stop just relying on their history and prestige (also hype). Hope its resolved to your liking OP.

PP have been working hard at getting their infamous turnaround times down, but I hope not at the expense of basic QC.

It is a step in the right direction. I'm beginning to wonder if NOT being independent may actually work in their favor at this point. Weren't their rumors recently of a buyout?

For new old stock (discontinued models) Patek has a system where AD’s send the piece for a free Service before it is sold. I wonder if the local service centre have wiped the hands and left a residue which needs cleaning off.
