What could have caused this
I hope this picture shows the damage done to the rehaut of my Rolex. (I did return it after some difficulty from the seller and got my money back) Can any one give me an idea of what could have happened to cause this? Due to the restrictions of the file size I can only upload a small portion of the scratches that continue around the entire inside of the watch ie rehaut. I am hoping there is a watchmaker or experienced person that can help me figure out how this could happen. Oh by the way, the seller tried to convince me it came from Rolex this way...

I agree with the seller as QC from Rolex can be below our expectations. However, this is magnified substantially and likely not visible to the naked eye, so I would likely have left it alone.

Well, I'm no expert, but there might have been an issue with the setup of the machine that does the laser etching. The focus of the beam could have been off, or it could have left slight burn marks around the etch. Given the direction of the marks matching the direction of the brushing on the rest of the rehaut, it could have happened during a re-work process to fix the poor etch. The imperfections could have been brushed off in an attempt to blend the defects in with the rest of the rehaut. Any raised material caused by the etching process could have been dragged across the surface during a buffing operation, leaving tiny scratch lines. Just my $.02
