New Sub 124060 Next To The Fat Boy 114060

I know there have been quite a few comparison photos already between the old and new Subs, but I recently picked up a new 124060 at the boutique and thought I’d take a few shots of it next to its older brother.

For my personal taste, this new iteration is everything I’ve always wanted in a Sub. I’ve had every version going back to the 5513, so I’ve sampled them all. For me, this one does it all perfectly. It combines the case shape of the 14060, the maxi dial of the 5513, and adds the modern niceties like the solid bracelet, glidelock clasp, and ceramic bezel.

I’ll also be keeping the 114060 anyway, because why not? My wife will probably start wearing it.

And my always awesome AD threw in a little steel Rolex branded Swiss Army knife. Very nice!

Does the new sub wear smaller, bigger or same?

It doesn't wear larger or smaller, but it does wear different. Somehow it feels better on the wrist, for me anyway. I know it's not thinner than the 114060, but somehow it feels like it is. Maybe because of its marginally larger size and wider bracelet the size is spread across the wrist better.

I think that's it. The wide bracelet of the 42 mm Explorer II almost made it feel sleek to me. Great watches! What a treat to have both

This is what I suspect for myself. I'm hoping to have one on the sooner side! I kind of imagine it will wear a little more like the Exp II does for me - seems thinner than my sub even though I know it isn't - I think it's a spread out thing - would this kind of be your assessment? Congrats by the way! Great pics

No doubt. The difference is so minute, it is hard to tell. Likely even harder when seen on the wrist from a distance. Personally, it was a lazy move by Rolex to redesign a case just by increasing the width of the bracelet and end links and milling down the crownguards a bit. I would never flip my 116618 just to get the 126618. That would be nonsensical.

I agree. If a person is 100% happy with their 11-series Sub then it makes little sense to trade for the new one. In my case I had always hoped they’d make these aesthetic changes, so for me it really was an improvement.

Maybe it's a mental block, but I prefer the maxi case. I feel the case of the new model is bloated. Again, my mind may be playing tricks because of the numbers.

Congratulations, wear it in good health! Glad to hear about the fit! If I can get one I’ll get it then retire from watch buying!

Thanks Doc! But don’t BS us, you’ll never retire from watch buying.

When this pandemic thing is over I’ll meet you at Trader Vics for a drink and you can try mine on.

The differences are pretty subtle. More subtle in these photos than any of the others I have seen. But I do like the case shape better on the new one. I'd like to try one on someday but that seems like a slim possibility considering in the 2 years since I got my 5 digit I have never seen a sub in an AD.

Both very nice, although I prefer the slightly more 'muscular' shape of the 11'

Both are excellent watches and both will continue to be the standard for diver watches.

Congrats!

Was gonna say! Great shot and both look great. The 11 does look more angular and I’m liking it better.

Totally valid, the 114060 is a kick ass watch. The maxi case is really tough looking, “muscular” is a good description for it. And the cal 3130 is rock solid, it’s always reassuring to know that it’s ticking under the hood. But for me the new subtle changes of the 124060 just edged it for me.

Cheers guys!

Great pictures! How do you feel about the wider bracelet on the new one?

I really love the bracelet. For me, the proportion of the bracelet width to the case size is perfect.

The new 124060 does appear to be something close to perfection.

New Sub 124060 Next To The Fat Boy 114060

Nobody except watch enthusiasts on these forums will ever notice the difference.

Congratulations by the way. Either way, this is still my favorite watch you can get that has an MSRP under $10k.
