PM Rolex vs SS Trinity Pieces

I've been debating trading my YM42 for a SS AP RO but am torn. One is a step up the horological ladder with a finer movement, but the Rolex is PM with an arguably more robust movement. Any of you ever debate this, a PM for SS watch? I do love the YM, but have a 5711 and a VC Overseas so feel the RO is the missing link... I did fall in love with the YM after owning it though, surprisingly more than I thought I would. I'll probably keep the YM and buy a RO because I'm sick in the head. Just wanted others thoughts.

I pondered this and could not get passed the psychological road block of going from a PM to SS. It would help if the SS RO offered more than just time and date. I thought about the dual time, but the dial just doesn't look balanced to me. So, I decided to just add the RO at some point in the future when I can justify putting out the cash, preferably closer to retail.

Feel the same way, both are time and date. More hand finishing in the AP for sure. One watch your paying for labor the other for material

All in my Rolex collection are much loved SS only pieces.. I'd rather and have spent my money on a higher horological trinity piece than a Rolex in PM. For me PM is just jewelry which I have no interest in.

Completing the trinity grail is too tempting! But I have no love for the YM.

+1.

I can't wear PM but even if I could I would not. It does nothing for me.

PM for SS seems like the debate people had back in the 70s when people saw the Royal Oak as crazy since it was an SS sports watch that commanded a higher price than a PM watch (and of course an avant garde design back then).

I would say the material is irrelevant. If you want to own a RO, it should be in SS anyways, so I won't even factor the material as a part of the decision. The real question is do you want the RO more or YM? Or you just simply want the RO to complete the collection.

If your answer is that your like the YM more, keep it the YM. Either pass on the RO or add it as an addition.

I personally would trade the YM without hesitation and get the RO lol

Lol yeah I always wanted the RO and the YM was a whim. I agree the RO is best in SS, although my friend has an 80s skeletonized version in platinum which as AMAZING

Not a fan of precious metals, but I think Rolex has read the minds of blue dial lovers. Love the Daytona and GMT blue dials in WG (because it looks like steel)...(but hate the high polish). Would never buy a YG or TT Rolex

If they put a ceramic tachymeter on the Daytona WG with the blue dial it would instantly become my favorite Rolex....one can dream

but to answer your question... SS is the only way to go

Is it wrong to ignore PM in any form and stick to SS for a grail watch, my preferred choice would be a VC Overseas but it seems so wrong to not want a watch with some form of gold for a grail watch.

Or am I just losing the plot as any watch can be a grail watch.

I never really cared about PM until I held them. A PM Rolex is stunning to behold, I suggest not handling one or you may catch the bug too. I honestly didnt care on the Nautilus, VC or RO about being SS since they're soooo refined regardless of the material. I mostly wanted the YM for the rubber strap, but the weight of the watch case and its shine is pretty spectacular. The dial is a bit plain, bezel is cool.. but is like a loaded S class vs a Rolls Royce, it lacks the dare I say specialness of the trinity watches. That said Rolex makes a spectacular daily driver for all occasions, the cases and movements are so robust if not particularly pretty to look at.

PS the specialness is also a drawback as there is only one AP dealer in Canada.

Agreed. I do like ss but when people are paying the same price as PM it baffles me.

Each to their own

I think sadly this is a case where you'll want enough funds to have both Rolex PM and SS holy trinity. Both very different. You'll feel better bang for the buck with Rolex, and very different tactile feel and purposes in a collection.

I decided I wanted gold watches to be on a leather strap and sold the two gold Rolexes (DD and Sub) I had and got a nice AP Tiffany 36mm on a Croc strap. I have the AP15500 and a PP5711 and don't hesitate to wear either whatever I'm doing.

Good hunting!

I’ve decided to go for my trio grail of Daytona’s. Here’s the first two, just waiting for my YG 116508 JM to arrive.

I do not consider going from a PM Rolex to RO an upgrade frankly. I think if you can't get over the mental gymnastics before doing the trade, you certainly will not be able to afterwards.

This last part of your post is very insightful. Never, ever sell a watch you love...not for any reason.

BTW, you're not sick in the head.

I pretty much regret all my flips so if you're not 100% certain, I always vote against the flip. Don't part with that YM42.

Great responses, pongster the pic of the trinity is awesome! Seems most of us feel the same, I traded one watch in my journey over the last 15 years and even though it wasn't "special" I regret it. Now I keep thinking of getting another preowned (not produced anymore) but every time would rather use that $$ for something else. Should've just kept it. As a watch guy you keep wondering.. should I trade 4 nice watches for something amazing and just have that? Like someone said mental gymnastics... sucks my wife really likes the YM42 as well so I keep getting... "don't sell it"... from her

The craftsmanship and horology trumps the material the watch is made of any day of the week.

Taking some steps down the ladder, it is like comparing a PM Longines to a SS Rolex and would you make that trade.
