Rolex Explorer 214270 vs Grand Seiko GMT by Hodinkee

I still adore my Rolex Explorer (my first Rolex/luxury watch purchase) but I am really liking the new Grand Seiko GMT by Hodinkee normally I would just keep the Explorer and buy the Grand Seiko but with just purchasing a new home and some improvements I am doing to the home (and having bought a Sub Date 116610LN), I am contemplating selling the Explorer to buy the Grand Seiko. Is that a crazy thing to do? Thoughts?

I would keep the Explorer out of those 2 - I think you would regret selling it down the line.

don't see a SS for a Grand Seiko. GS is okay as a piece to round out your box but i would not buy if you have a small collection.

I wouldn't have a problem selling a Rolex to buy a Grand Seiko, but not that particular model. There are many far nicer ones out there, IMO.

Agree with this opinion. I love how the GS snowflake I never tried one on but it think it would be a bit light for my taste.

I love the GS GMTs, but I’m still surprised at their 30m water resistance rating. It depends on how you use the watch imo. I’m still new to this, but it appears (I’m no expert, this is not advice)... it appears that the OP39 is more expensive now that it’s been discontinued. This makes me wonder if the 39mm Explorer would have the same fate. Rolex should be taking part (online) in a watch fair in April 2021 apparently. So the question is whether the HODINKEE special release is what you really want. If it’s a GS GMT in general, I’d probably wait until after the next Rolex release to see what happens to the Explorer.

I have a Grand Seiko and really like it. It is a high beat and a beautiful piece. That being said if I were to get a GS again it would be a spring drive. I personally wouldn’t have an issue giving up that explorer for a watch I think I’d enjoy more as it doesn’t do too much for me.

I’d keep the Explorer. It’s much more versatile than the GS and can be worn anywhere and for any occasion.

The GS is nice but I think the SBGM221 is nicer and these are readily available. If you live to regret selling selling the Explorer you may find it difficult to reacquire.

I’ve been contemplating a 221 but this would be an addition to my collection as I consider it a dress watch suitable for occasional ear rather than an everyday piece.

Between these two I would keep the Explorer. I like GS and am looking to add one in the future but I'm not personally feeling that one.

I wouldn't, not a big fan of that GS model.

The Explorer and Sub Date are a great pair.

Yep. Crazy thing to do.

Do whatever your heart desires. Not crazy at all, I've sold watches to move up the watch totem pole and vice-versa sold a higher end piece to move down.

As long as you fine with what you are getting. Perfect!

However, you might need to change your username after this sale.

Keep the Exp.. classic watch. Probably a GADA option...

For the GS see if you can swing the Hi beat version of the GMT (cream or black dial) if possible. Don’t do it for the standard version.

Like others say, the spring drive one could be tough to get at the exp price range but worth looking used.

The love of an explorer has its ups and downs given its subtle nature. Regardless it is a special watch and if you set it aside for a few weeks, you’ll miss it and go back with a renewed love.

The GS IMO is a novelty love. It’s special, maybe more so than many some Rolex models. Not special like an Explorer though.

I’d 100% say crazy and keep that Exp.

Only one correct answer: You need both!

I think many GS models outshine many Rolex models from a horological perspective by a country mile.

However, I would never get rid of an Explorer. There is just something about that watch. It really is timeless.

I echo the previous poster... Buy both!

Selling Explorer over most watches would not be a good idea.

What about for an Omega Speedmaster (FOIS)?

No, stop trying to trade one of the most comfortable, easiest to read Rolex watch.

My bad, if you really don't like your Explorer, trade it. Just make sure it's something timeless or iconic as well. The Speedmaster is a better example of that compared to that GS.

I love GS, but I’d stick with your 214270 over that particular GS model.

That’s a watch to add at a discount when GS makes a bunch of other LE next year and the market forgets all about this one.

“I still adore.” That’s the end of the inquiry. Keep it. You can pick up the GS later.

I say keep the EXP and you can always add a GS later on
As a wealthy and wise man said to me.
Never sell it if you own it as you can never buy it back for the price you sell it for.
