Which 16570 ?

Should I get one with the older 3185 movement or pay the premium and get one with the newer 3186 movement? I think the premium is around $800-$1k depending on the year of the older one. Please elaborate your reasoning if you don't mind. Thanks

Which 16570 ?

No reason to get the new movement. 3185 worked well for decades. Easier access to parts if you want a local watchmaker to service your 16570.

The 3186 is trading at a premium because of a perceived (or advertised) value in its “rarity”. The 16570 Explorer II has never been one that was particularly desirable or collectible, by the masses. I make that statement as a habitual trader who has owned many of both the black and white dials and I have never seen a real “demand” for them when I resell them. It’s not something people fall over themselves to acquire. Each time I go to sell one, it’s apparent to me that the demand is not comparable with the demand of something like the Submariner, GMT or Daytona references. Thus, any demand for the 3186 will be in a much smaller segment of Rolex collectors, at some distant point in the future.

I would never count on recovering a “premium paid” for the 3186 movement. Especially if you are going to wear it! A serious collector who wants one may very wall want an unworn example. All statements are purely my opinion, and experience. YMMV.

The 16570 Polar was my first Rolex. I loved it immensely, for several years.

Happy hunting!

Agreed
God I miss my EXP II's at times.
Such an honest reference with just enough versatility

I think Bladeshot said about all that can be said on this... I agree with his comments.

I would hunt one with SELs, determine between holes or no-holes case, and pay any premium for condition, particularly with the radial brushing on the bezel, lugs, and the less bracelet “stretch” the better.

Good luck!

Cheers. Good call on the SELs.

I still miss mine sometimes.
Maybe one will be back.

I have gone back and forth so many times on getting a 16570. It’s such a great watch.

If Rolex would just return the 216570s to 40mm I would hand over my money blindly

Yep. I wish; big orange hand; 40mm.
Sigh.

That is precisely what I am hoping for while waiting to see if and how the Explorer line gets updated next year.

Knowing Rolex, they'll screw it up and go from 42mm to 43, while making it even MORE of a maxi-dial.

Agree. Not worth the premium on this one.

I had issues (common issue) with my 3186. It cost over $500 to fix. The 3185 apparently does not have this problem.
