I think I figured out when to go to my AD -- Before I want a Watch...

I bought a DJ yesterday so I am out of cash for at least 6 mos. So I realized that now is the time to put myself on a list for my next watch.

I went today to my local AD and asked if they'd be able to get me a Sub Date or a TT Root Beer in 6-12 months. The sales associate seemed to be much more confident that I could get the GMT, but told me that I need to be ready because they'll only call each customer (or at least one with little history like me I assume) once a year.

Anyway, prior to this I was going to ADs, waiting a few months then getting inpatient and buying gray. Hoping I can actually get one at list price this time, although I guess buying a TT should make that a bit easier. Also it's nice to leave an AD not feeling frustrated over the wait :)

I told her not to call me for six months. She seemed good with that, and it sounded like it'd be at least a few months anyway, so I'll wait and see what happens.

I love the AD game and encourage everyone to play it.

Hopefully you are managing your expectations though.

Getting a TT GMT is relatively easy comparing to a sub date, sometimes you don't event need a purchase history for that piece if you get lucky. However, the sub date usualy requires a minimum of 20000$+speeding for a black, and 30000$+ for a green.

Interesting. Yeah not holding out much hope for the Sub, but would be happy with the Root Beer. I'm definitely more of a gray dealer kind of guy, so will be curious if I can get a watch out of an AD before breaking down and buying online...

Quoted as if there were a semi-official book on these watches and they're pre-requisite spend amounts... Gotta love it.

I think it's good what u have asked of your AD and I'm sure your up front honesty will pay off.
I'm sure sometimes a lot of people get caught out by an early surprise call!
Good luck

When buying high value things it's always nice to give the sales associate some notice so you can get the specific watch (or car for example,) that you want rather than having to mess about. Patience is a virtue. Even when you went another piece of wrist jewellery!!

I bet he can get the Sub date. My only purchase at an AD was a DJ41 and some months later he said he could get me Sub (my parents did by some jewelry from the fella though - maybe that helped).

Thanks everybody for the well wishes. Just went about an hour out of town today and stopped by another AD while I was waiting for my car to be serviced. Walked into their new store and saw literally had about ten empty Rolex displays, I think one old lady datejust was all they had.

The SA asked if he could help me and I said, "I wanted to see if you had any Rolexes but I guess not. The guy said "you should have been here a few weeks ago, these were all stocked. Then I told him, "I'll be honest, I haven't bothered coming in lately because I've been trying to get a Rolex from an AD for the last year, but the only two I've been able to get were online." He asked who I talked to...blah, blah, blah, told me I was probably still on the list from a year ago and pointed to another SA and said he's wrapping up a steel sub right now for a customer, that we can get you a sub date... anyway, he took my info, again.

I'm not holding my breath, but it felt good to vent.
