Buying 116500 w/o box and papers?

Looking at a black 116500 in like new condition going for about 3k under market (from a legit retailer) but has no box and papers. is it a bad idea to do this in case I decide to sell later on? Option could be to buy a box and get service papers? not sure if that is as good?

Id look for box and papers, especially on such a modern watch - especially for resale down the line.

In my view, papers are worthless once the watch is out of warranty. If one needs a box, there are plenty for sale cheap on eBay.

Have to agree the most important bit is the watch, as today the so called papers which in the real world are just a warranty much like you get with a TV. And today bits of paper boxes even the plastic cards are more easy to fake than the watch.

I don't trust this new of a watch not having papers. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

The majority of used watches come as-is. Forum lurkers have convinced themselves that everybody saves these things, and that just isn't so.

Legit retailer, good price - the decision is yours. What else do you buy with the idea that you might "decide to sell later on."?

If seller is good, you can buy a box and manual, etc for well under a grand. Next service you'll get a card. So sure, go for it.

I think papers/cards are more relevant on vintage and neo-vintage references. A 116500 probably hasn’t had a dial swap.

Buy at a discount and sell at a discount.

Assuming it’s not stolen and you trust the seller then go for it. Even if you sell down the line, you’ll still get the market value for a 116500 with no papers. (Which is what you’re paying now)

The assumption being that the market price doesn't change. You will always get a premium price for a complete package.

I personally wouldn't do that deal with a modern watch

For the people saying it will hurt resale in the future you are getting it for 3k under market on the front end. Anything you lose on the back end you saved on the front end. I never get that argument.

Perhaps you seriously limit your market in the number of potentially interested people ?
There are many buyers insisting on original papers and a full set only.

As a private individual I am one of them and never buy any watch without those. Below market or not doesn’t matter. Just not interested.

I also do know of some professional sellers who also don’t buy or trade in modern references without papers.

Indeed. Plus if he wants to sell he can get an RSC service down and buy a period correct box and manual, the new warrantee card that comes with the service is more robust than any expired original warrantee card that would have come with the watch in my view, on a modern reference.

OP go for it

I would not personally, but your willingness to accept a naked modern reference is only something you know. I might change my decision if say an Explorer, but not a SS Daytona.

No way. It's selling for 10% off so you know that it has an impact.

Would a RSC swap out a black dial for a white dial if it’s in service and the buyer requested it? I’ve heard you can change dials in other references it the Daytona white black switch is more significant. Similarly could you ask for a Sky Dweller blue dial swap during service?

$3k under market makes me suspicious right off the bat. What’s wrong with it?

The market is littered with super high quality fakes and stolen goods. If you can easily return it for the price you paid, then ok, but immediately confirm it’s not fake or stolen.

The Daytona 116500LN has been presented in Basel 2016 so even the oldest watches on the market are still under the 5 years manufacturer warranty.
I struggle to believe that someone would buy a watch that is one of the top 5 most sought after watches in the market, that increases drastically its value the same day you get out from an AD showroom and get a rid of the box and of the warranty card during its validity; BTW you wrote that the watch look in like new conditions so what better than its box to keep a watch when it is not on the wrist.
I disagree with those that compare watches warranty cards with appliances warranty paper. It is true that warranty cards can be fake as well as it is true that  can be easily detected that they are indeed fake.
What due diligence has been done by the reseller to assess the lawful origin of the watch? Would you be happy to get a simple statement of lawful origin from a reseller? How can you verify if the watch has been stolen for example in Abuja or in Caracas? To me if the reseller can provide you with a proof of purchase of the watch in a Rolex AD and you can go ahead to evaluate if the requested price is fine for a no B&P Daytona or better to look for something else.
Someone can be in favour or against the speculation of the grey market, but nobody should support illicit transactions.
