The 116600 SD4K would be the perfect watch if.....

As ever the revolving doors have been in operation again I find myself with a watch I have had previously but now I look upon it in a different light again, for how long is anyones guess.

The watch in question is the relatively short lived 116600 Sea-Dweller. I love the watch it's nearly perfect. It got me asking myself what would make it perfect? This weekend I put my finger on what it was and is what leads me to my next question.

Would the 126600 dial fit inside the 116600, thus giving the 116600 the classic Sea-Dweller proportions and size but with the lovely red line of 'Sea-Dweller' text? Does anyone have the definitive answer?

From studying photos side by side I really can't decide some look the same while other seem to differ, I am almost certain they share the same dial size but does anyone know for sure?

If it’s just one line of red text you want you are really nit picking. I love my SD43 but you can hardly see the red text anyway.

I agree. In the huge closeup photos you see online the red is really noticeable, but on your wrist (and with the lack of external AR) it's often quite hard to see in anything but bright sunlight. At least in my personal experience anyway...

That said, it is still a very nice historic touch when light conditions allow, and a big part of what drew me to the SD43 in the first.

It annoys me that the end links stick out past the lugs. I don’t understand why Rolex would do that? They did fix it on the new DSSD and SD43

To add: Sd4k is a great watch.. but it was never this popular during 2014-2017
It actually was not popular at all. Lol

Most people opted to buy the sub rather than pay the extra $ for similarly sized (but thicker) sd4k, which usually sat in the display case.

It’s funny to see all the new “love” for it since it’s been discontinued, along with recent Rolex scarcity.

Kudos to those who bought it before 2018.

I wouldn’t mess with this beautiful - and somewhat rare - model. I briefly debated getting one of those instead of a 16600. The new wristbands and clasps are nice. What I didn’t like that much was the new case/lug shape, ceramic inlay and the modern dial with the blue lume and bigger hour markers. But it’s a great transition model and like I said I’d leave it original and enjoy it as is.

do not ask 116600 to be the perfect diver ...
you can surely ask an obtain to be unique, particular, that will not be repeated ...
when things are repeated, they are often at a lower level (e.g. SD43 in comparison with 1680 and 1665 red)

I had a 16600 and loved it, I managed to get the SD43 when it first came out and I didn't like it. Too big and top heavy for me (skinny wrists). I then got an SD4K and I think its perfect. Matt dial, 40mm, ceramic bezel, no cyclops and the perfect bracelet.

I wonder, given the state of the rolex sport market, if they kept the 40mm without cyclops and just added the red font, it would have been more desirable than the 43? I mean, given that they sell all their sports models easily, there was no need to stop the 40mm?

The red text is awesome but it's just a nod to commemorate the anniversary. The color red is the first to disappear when diving into greater depths (maybe some divers can chime in) so it's quite ironic with the color choice.

Red text? I dont really care of it. It is almost unnoticeable cause it is not bright red, it is dark faded red. All you can see on pictures is just a post-filters or ajusted saturation.

I would lose the date window before I worried about the red text.

Whenever we have to resort to modifying a watch from its original intent in pursuit of perfection, we have already lost. Love it as is or keep searching.
