Results: Watch size x Wrist circumference
Greetings all. Yesterday I posted a pair of polls targeting those who have a strong preference for certain case size ranges in their watches. I am interested in the wrist size "demographics" of those who prefer modern vs classic sized watches. If you haven't already done so, please add your data (if applicable) to the respective poll below:
If you strongly prefer "modern" case sizing (think 39 mm OP or DD40 for non-sport watches, and 42+ mm sport watches like Explorer II or DSSD): https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=799309 If you strongly prefer "classic" case sizing (think 36 mm OP or DD36 for non-sport watches, and 39-40 mm sport watches like 5-digit Subs or the BB58): https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=799310 The preliminary data shows the highest response rate for both case-size preference cohorts are TRF members with wrist circumference 6.5-.6.9 in. This was interesting, especially for those who preferred modern case sizes. I expected to see more respondents with larger wrists preferring the larger cases -- perhaps those members haven't voted yet? Also, it was interesting to see that a decent number of TRF members with wrist sizes 7.0 in or greater preferred classic cases. Keep the data coming everyone -- much appreciated! |

the data is skewed. people just responded with what their wrist size is. it is pretty apparent by the results.

Well the assumption is that people only respond to one of the 2 polls, to indicate their preference regarding watch size, and then specify their wrist size once selecting their preference towards "classic" vs. "modern"

Based on the limited responses so far, you might be right about the “average” wrist size on the TRF. Assuming that this is the case, it is interesting (to me at least) that there are similar proportions of members preferring modern or classic sizing in the average wrist size range. Hopefully we can get more responses. I was honestly expecting more from the larger wrist contingent to represent in the poll.

My interpretation of this data is this:
1) More TRF members (from those who voted) prefer classic sizes (84) vs modern (51). 2) Our preference for watch size is independent of our wrist size, although more of those who prefer modern are clustered at 6.5-7in and above, whereas those who prefer classic are evenly spread around 6.5-7in. Thank you, OP, for this very interesting initiative :) |

I have a larger wrist, compared to the avg. here apparently, but prefer the classic pieces. I suspect age will more closely correlate to watch size preference vs. wrist size. But that's just a guess by this old classic.

Thanks for checking in - age may very well be a variable with a strong association to watch size preference. Perhaps a future poll

Rolex has the relevant data on their end. There is a reason they have been increasing sizes over the last few decades.

OP thanks for the interesting poll. I came across this article that some might find intriguing.
https://timeandtidewatches.com/sex-p...-affects-life/ “The average wrist size of a man is 7.25 inches or 18.42 cm,” he reports on his website. “Fifty per cent of men have a wrist that is bigger than 7.25 inches and 50 per cent have a wrist that is smaller. Eighty per cent of men have a wrist size bigger than 6.75 inches or 17.5 cm, and 20 per cent of men have a wrist size bigger than 7.75 inches or 19.67 cm.” |

1. The TRF wrist “curve” is the same as the general population, but a) larger wristed individuals just haven’t logged in their data yet and/or b) larger wristed individuals don’t have a strong preference for modern vs classic sizes and thus self-excluded from the poll and/or c) smaller wristed individuals have strong preference for modern vs classic sizes and thus were eligible for participation in the poll Or 2. The TRF wrist “curve” is not the same as the general population and a) skews toward more slender wrists or b) is some distribution we have no clue about Either way, these polls are not going to give us an absolute idea about anything/everything, but the results are of interest to at least some and the more data, the better the picture. Keep your preferences/wrist circumferences coming! |
