Convince me: DJ II 116334 fluted or smooth bezel

Pictures of the two options attached. This is will be my first Rolex. I originally was set on the fluted bezel but now I'm not so sure. Although this is a datejust, with the Arabic numerals and the oyster bracelet it's a tad "sporty" (well as sporty as a datejust can be).

I do like the bling of the fluted bezel but I wonder if it is "too much" for a daily wear type watch. I don't necessarily want it to draw too much attention.

Also, I wonder about the durability of the gold fluted bezel. It seems the smooth stainless would be more conducive to polishing to keep it looking new? Seems like any time I come across a used DJ it's the fluted bezel that has damage if there is any.

To me the smooth bezels on DJs look wrong. They look like a placeholder for something else. I personally would never consider a DJ with a smooth bezel. You know what they say about opinions though...

Based on the photos, I prefer the first one. For jubilee bracelet, I prefer fluted bezel.

Exactly. And I’ll add with this color combo the first one, definitely. Go get it

Yes so I typically agree with nikshub1 the smooth just makes it look like something is missing, but when it comes to DJ II they all came with oysters and you cannot get a jubilee for it that I'm aware of, theyre an oddball size.

For some reason I'm coming around to the smooth. Does it make sense it can be polished up and show less wear too? Or am I over thinking that part.

Go with the fluted bezel. I’ve had this over 9 years now and the bezel still looks amazing. I wear this watch in almost any situation, from a t shirt and shorts to one of the handful of times I’ve had to wear a suit.

It's a fantastic, unique dial. I went back and forth on this query as well. I believe you are correct in that it is impossible to put a jubilee on a DJ2.

Personally, I'd go with the smooth dial. A lot here, including myself, think Rolex missed the mark a bit on the fluted bezel for the DJ2 and DD2. Proportions are just a bit off. Just opinions, though. If at all possible, try to see both in person.

Whichever you choose, congrats in advance. That is my favorite Datejust dial.

The pictures of these watches are taken inside a white box which have killed the mesmerizing reflective quality of the fluted bezel. In real life the difference between fluted and smooth is enormous.
The smooth makes the DJ super sporty, the fluted makes it more dressy. You can chose based on your lifestyle, if too sporty and rarely have to be in suits go smooth bezel, if not, pick the fluted.

My 1st Rolex will be a DJ and it will be a smooth bezel with a jubilee bracelet.

The fluted bezel looks fantastic on the DJ but think it is too flashy for all occasions. With a smooth bezel it is tone down and the jubilee bracelet makes it so classy.

But it's not what we think.......go with your gut and get what you want......

Fluted without a doubt. It’s Rolex signature. Without it why buy a DJ

Agree with this, if I could have both I would, the DJ works well in so many combinations.

Yes, it's just preference but eventually all the 4 possible combinations work and there's no wrong combo for Datejust.

I am a huge fan of the classic datejust. Four digit and five digit. I have a place for the fluted bezel and the engine turn bezel in those models. I also have a DJ 41 and because of the bigger size and its shape I just found the fluted bezel was too flashy for my liking and for my own personal tastes. I tend to like casual and the smaller five digit Datejust with a fluted bezel is more subtle. So it works for me in that model, but not the 41.
So for me it’s a smooth bezel on the DJ41 but also with an oyster bracelet. And as others have said that gives it a more sporty look as opposed to dressy. True, maybe not a ‘classic’ datejust in some peoples’ eyes, but it’s still a great looking watch. And it still is a DJ.
