Icon5 Is 116613LB bluesy overkill?

For work, I am usually in business casual or sometimes a tshirt and cargo pants for Fridays. I currently have a Sub 114060 (NoDate) and an older 1980s stainless Datejust (Jubilee band) with silver face.

I am considering a 116613LB bluesy. I can't help but wonder if the bright blue and gold of this watch would be overkill? I love the colors, but don't want to overpower people I work with.

Does anyone who owns a bluesy ever feel awkward when wearing it? Do the gold portions scratch easily?

Thanks

Don’t do it. If you’re worried about “overpowering the people you work with” by wearing a watch you’re not the kind of guy that can rock one unapologetically and confidently in any situation which leads us back to your original question. No.

This sounds about right but Imo, its such a beautiful watch to own, I would not care what anyone thinks! One of my gold PCLs did get a scratch in it. Now I don't have to worry about getting the first scratch lol!!!

Not an owner but I’ve had 2 friends who have owned that watch. It totally pops on the wrist and is very noticeable. If you want a fly under the radar watch, that’s not it.

My husband has the 16613 TT black face Sub, and he found that the center gold links scratch rather easily. To be fair, the watch was a gift from his father, so it’s very special to him, and he really wants to take care of it. He ended up getting a 16710 as his daily wear Rolex. He had no anxieties with thar watch whatsoever.

There are a ton of posts on TRF about scratches to gold bracelets. Actually, there are a ton of posts here on TRF about scratches to bracelets, bezels, cases, crystals, etc. Everyone has a varying degree of tolerance for scratches. What seems like no big deal to some is a huge deal to others.

I don’t like scratches or dings on my car. I’ve worn a Rolex daily for over 20 years because it’s tough enough for daily wear. That being said I recently bought an older DJ with all-brushed Oyster links for my new daily watch because I don’t like scratches, and they don’t bother me on a brushed link as they would on a PCL. Plus, with an older watch, there are already some scratches on it, so I don’t go nuts if I put a scratch on it.

Basically, only you can answer if scratches from daily life would bother you. I have a friend in his 80s who wears his decades-old yellow gold DD every day. The Sub is durable enough to wear every day; it just depends on how pristine to you want it to look.

If you really want a Bluesy, and won’t feel self conscious wearing it, go for it! It’s a stunning watch and one of the most gorgeous watches Rolex has ever made.

I don't feel award wearing mine at all, be it with a suit or a t shirt. It's not about how it looks so much as how you think it looks. If you base your choices on anticipation of what other people will think of you, you will never make a right choice for you. It's obviously a TT watch but nothing like as bling and sparkly as a Z-Blue or any Sky Dweller bezel. It's just a really nice looking watch.

If in doubt don't. But if you can get to see one for real you will know for sure. Of course the gold scratches easily and quickly. That's a part of how it ages and imprints itself on its owner. No two will ever be exactly the same once worn for a month and the micro scratching reduces the flash from the gold. But it doesn't eliminate it. That would be pointless.

For a proper under the radar special, look no further than the 116619LB. Now that's a watch and a half and only you will know unless you regularly mingle with the WIS fraternity. It's widely available, you just need to spend more and/or save for longer.

the difference between rolexes is very small compared to wearing one at all. If the bluesy isnt appropriate, then perhaps any rolex isnt appropriate - which is fine. Apple watch or using one's phone is ok without a mechanical timepiece in some environments.

On the other hand, if a rolex is ok, then probably any rolex is ok, and similarly women might have LV or chanel handbags that they carry into work instead of a nameless purse from target.

Yes, I do indeed love the colors of the bluesy. Always have since I saw it.

Help me understand what is meant by wearing a watch with confidence. I am not sure what that means. I've been wearing Rolex watches since college. Granted both of mine (DD and Sub) have been stainless versions.

Anyways, the bluesy is still under consideration.

Wearing a watch with confidence is buying what you like, wearing it when you want to and not worrying about what anyone thinks when you’re wearing it. This thread wouldn’t be a thing if you buy and wear what you want and don’t need others validation.

Exactly...
Buying what you love and admire and wearing it irrespective of the opinions of others.

I'm one that really doesn't care what others think. I purchased my Bluesy earlier this year and wear it with everything and on all occasions, from business to formal events to my sons lacrosse games.

I saw a bluesy in person yesterday - beautiful watch, but looks perfect with casual clothing and doesn't "overpower" anything

Overpower the people you work with? WTF? Do you call your co-workers each morning to coordinate outfits just to make sure one isn't outshining the other? I've always felt that - strange enough - I wear a watch because I like it. Never really gave a rat's ass as to what others might think or how it will be perceived. They didn't buy it. I did.

This, 100%... How on earth can you overpower somebody with a watch? However if I remember correctly in one of Ian Fleming´s books James Bond battered a man in the face in order to escape using his Rolex (probably an Explorer, like Ian Fleming wore?) as a knuckle duster! The crystal was smashed but the watch still ticked. Now that's really "overpowering"...!!

I Own the bluesy. About one person notices per year - always has been a female. It is a strikingly beautiful piece, and can be worn daily.

I have no problem wearing my bluesy all the time. But I drive a Lamborghini my AD knew the watch would fit my lifestyle. I don’t care much for what anyone thinks of my watches (and I love when people don’t care and wear whatever they enjoy).

I think the bluesy is one of the most beautiful watches Rolex makes - the sunburst blue dial is stunning. Personally I think you should go for it and enjoy it. On days you want to be low key just wear your sub

Hope you don’t mind me asking but would this be your preference over wearing the full gold sub, have you tried one on? Judging by your car it’s obviously within your means so wondering if the tt in this particular model is favourable to you than the PM version?

Back on topic, personally not a fan of this one in a two tone but I know it’s hugely popular, I prefer the tt in black. The full gold blue dial on the other hand is a different story :)

I totally prefer the bluesy over the full gold sub. It’s just a personal preference but I like how the stainless steel tones down the piece a little and allow the blue dial to pop. It’s definitely a watch you gotta see in person and wear to admire. I wasn’t a fan in the beginning but once I saw it at my AD I knew I had to have it!

My preference usually is: two tone = yellow gold and full precious metal = rose gold.

Rose gold doesn’t seem to work for me except for on leather. I do love a YG tt however I usually go champagne :)
