I have to say in the last few months I have jumped around all over the place in my decision to buy a Rolex, well not so much to buy 'a' Rolex but more like WHICH Rolex!

So far I have gone from:

TOG - until I discovered how expensive they were!!
Explorer 1
Air-King - Salmon Dial actually any dial variation I was eyeing off
Submariner no-date
Submariner date

and now I have settled on wanting a GMT baaaaaadly!

But I could change my mind before I have the rest of the money saved, just preparing you all......

So how about the rest of you??? Did you have similar problems???

Hmm. To paraphrase the Bard, some are born with Rolex, some achieve Rolexes, and some have Rolexes thrust upon them. I was in the last category when my parents gave me a TT DateJust as a graduation present. While I love it and still wear it occasionally, I'd been a diving watch guy for the preceding 16 years, and I immediately set about looking at sports Rolexes.

The first port of call was obvious - the SS Sub Date. After that, I looked at the TT Blue Sub, but by that time I'd discovered with the DJ that gold links were a bit too fragile for me, so it was back to the old SS. Along the way I came across the SD, but it wasn't until I actually saw it in the flesh (on my firend's wrist) that I went, "Hello, how long's this been going on?".

I went down to the AD and tried both the Sub and SD on - the dealer was offering both at the same price. The Sub felt nice, but the moment I put on the SD, that was it - signed, sealed and delivered.

Mine were no-date Sub, Sub date, Date Just, Exp 1, GMT. I've had them all except the DJ and ended up keeping the Sub date, it's just me

I went through the following

white gold pres
yellow gold sub
2 tone datejust (old style)
ss datejust (old style)
16610 (no lug holes) submariner
116200 (new style datejust)

the first 2 were investments when i was young and they paid off largely (held some assets). The rest were just trying them out until i found the 116200.
My favorite watch currently ive ever had.
I want a SS daytona(white face) or a TT daytona (silver face) next
who knows

Then I wanted a Sub, but I ended up getting the SD at the end

In 1974, I got myself an OMEGA Dynamic Geneve....and then in 1980 got my first TT DJ on Jubilee.

Never looked back since.

I started looking at them in 1992 after I graduated from college. I really did not know what I was doing. I liked the Explorer II white face, Sub date, and the GMT. I did not make all that much money in those days and could not commit to stealing cash from my reckless social life to purchase one.

Fast forward fourteen years and 100% in price increases... I am married and finally financially stable with a terrific wife. I looked at GMTs and Subs on-line then in person on a cruise (St. Thomas). Three months later bought the GMT. It fits my personality and is the perfect tool for my profession.

The best part is (this may seem a little strange) I see my wife's smiling face in my mind and it puts this small satisfied smile on my face everytime I check the time or the date (btw is about 100 times a day)

I narrowed my choice down to GMT II or Sub. At the time the GMT was with the jubilee bracelet so I chose the sub.

I bought a TT DJ first, because I have always considered it the quintessential Rolex. It was the one I saw and fell in love with as a child. The Daytona came next, and then the Sub.

AJC - Thats very true, however I think my colleagues and my partner think I have flipped my lid... always looking at pictures of watches! Although one of the guys I work with, his wife is a Jeweller so he has some appreciation of fine watches. When my Tudor was back from teh RSC he sat there and watched the seconds hand tick around the dial for a few mins.... he loved how precise it was

Prince - thats a stunning collection you have, a bit of everything, the perfect cross section of Rolex's in my opinion.

Gedanken - I thought i might have driven Lol-X a bit crazy with all my PM babble over at the TZ forum. Now I can drive all of you crazy with my questions!

The first Rolex I looked at purchasing was the least expensive, Air King w/ blue dial.

After several weeks I changed my mind to a Datejust w/ white dial.

I then moved to the sport models. I immediately fell in love with the Pepsi GMT.

For several weeks I bounced between the black GMT and the red/black GMT.

I ended up purchasing a vintage Pepsi w/ extra black insert!

My first Rolex, well I was broke so I thought about the least expensive one that I could gte that had a date. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date. Stainless steel, oyster band, smooth bezel. The year was 1987 and it broke the bank at a whopping $1,600. from the AD.

Broke is a financial situation. Poor is a state of mind. Poor people should work on things other than watches and computers. Broke people need to get a credit card to get what they will pay back. :-)

Earlier this month however I got the GMT II in black. I do not like the all gold models and no two tones jumped out at me. The Daytona has no date on it, so it was the GMTII or the Sea Dweller. I looked at the sub and some others but kept coming back to the GMT and SD.

I think there is a law of nature in force here, something about water seeking its own level. The GMT was made for ME. And that's what counts.

i had always had my eye on the ss sub....but after learning about the gmt, i figured you get more bang for your buck because it has an extra needle(general comment i know the movements are different).

Well I was using a Rolex date (15200) with the blue dial but it was so small on my 7" wrist it looked a bit silly. I also have a black dial Tag Heuer link (one of the huge magnum cases from 2002) which is a great size for me but it was a quartz and I do really prefer chronometers. (it was a gift to me by a buddy that is a Tag AD btw so it wasn't a choice in movement!)

Previous to those two I had an Omega Seamaster, the Bond model with the blue dial. So I really wanted a white dial watch. Never had white and I thought it would look pretty good with any clothing option in the wardrobe.

So it came down to either the Omega Seamaster 300M GMT with a white dial or the Rolex Explorer II with white dial. Both had the GMT hand and I really liked this option for travelling. Obviously there was a huge difference in price but the Rolex sat better on my wrist and it just felt "right". Now I pretty much wear it 24/7 and I just use the Tag Link for occasions when I want a black dial. Although this will be replaced by probably a Seadweller or possibly a Sub Date when the time is right.. As for the Rolex Date well I'll probably flip it when I go for the SD or Sub.
