Would you pay the premium for a Ceramic Ss Daytona?

Given that ceramic stainless steel Daytonas are almost impossible to find, would you pay gray market prices for one? In this case, the white faced variant is available new in box with stickers for about $39,000. Bite the bullet and buy or wait for a few years with no assurance of getting one, while in that period price might increase even more, given that a Daytona is a must have for my collection.

Do what makes sense for YOU.

But NO, at least not that kind of premium. I am kicking myself for not buying one at mere 50% markup but I didn’t know better :(

No. I can’t fathom why people think it is worth paying $39k for

You could apply for a part time SA job at an AD. Once you have the job just try to get permission to buy a Daytona out the back safe. Once they charge your credit card and size it. Say “I resign” and walk out the door.

Hmmm, maybe I should brush up my resume.

I never pay over retail, however, for the black dial ceramic I did. You’ll all recall a while back everyone was aghast that they were “double retail”…well, I bit the bullet and picked one up at that time. Sure glad I did, since now they’re 36-38k.

Will this happen for those who are paying today’s price? Will they continue to go up?

Who knows….

It isn’t just Rolex, my AP 26331ST has doubled in value, my 5980 is up almost 40%. Expensive Wrist watches (our hobby) are back in vogue in a massive way

Low 20’s I bit but I got a great trade value as well.

Current prices in upper 20’s and into the 30’s hell no but no harsh judgment to those who do. I’m sure there are prices I’ve paid that others would also find crazy.

At the end of the day it’s your money, spend it as you wish.

I would bite the bullet and go for it. I recently acquired a 116500 from a TS and it is a special piece. No regrets here. I also realized that I don’t have a long history with my AD. I’ve been waiting for almost 3 years and suspect I could wait 3 more with no guarantee. I don’t see the value of the SS Daytonas dropping significantly but even if it does I am not going to sweat it any longer so I finally took the plunge. I’ve been watching the values steadily climb which added to the frustration. Finally, I sold a watch I never wore to help consolidate my collection.

It’s a personal decision and many forum members would frown on paying the premium. However, I know where I stand with my AD. I suspect many people hope a good relationship will carry the day but it is almost impossible to get a Daytona without a significant purchase history of jewelry and other watches. Just my two cents…..

+1. Personally wouldn’t, but if you have the money, view it as a must have, and it isn’t going to have much of a financial impact, why not? YOLO.

I wouldn’t do it. I paid 35k for a brand new solid gold Daytona from my AD in 2019. No way I’m going to pay more for a stainless. I would take that 40k and try and buy an AP or something. I know those are hard to get as well, but eventually someone would take my money. I’m in no rush.

Personally, i wouldn't buy it and pay premium for it

But you should buy it. Keep the hype market going and push prices higher!

Not at the nearly $40k price they’re nearly pushing now. I feel like I won the lottery getting mine from an AD at retail ($13,150) this week. That said, I don’t see the aftermarket cooling off on these, stainless Daytonas have a 30 year history of being just about the toughest watch to come by. Although I have to admit it is shocking lately.

Wow. So cool to see decent retailers handing them out to real customers.

I got mine at 35k and traded in a BB 41 red and a BNIB z-blue Milgauss that I did not use nor wanted to plus a ton of cash.

Currently the Daytona is the watch that I enjoy the most and wear on the weekends or special occasions without blame.

Back then, I bought and enjoyed watches for what they were (2012 and a SS Daytona) and did not think about them as investments. If the market is screwed now, I don’t care about it, nor I will wait 3 years and 100k+ worth of purchases with an AD to enjoy wearing it.

No I would not pay current listed prices for a 116500. I got mine from AD when it was $12400, had I not been able to buy at retail, I just wouldn’t have one.

So you’re saying you wouldn’t have paid $12401? ;)

I did not say that, said I would have not paid over retail. US MSRP went up to $13150 a few months after I got mine, had it come in after the price increase I would have paid that, but nice that I didn’t have to.

do i regret that purchase? no. it is a great looking watch and i enjoy it a lot. altho nowadays i mostly only wear my gmt's.

daytona looks and feels like a $15-20k watch. no way is it a $40k watch`
