39mm Explorer or 39mm OP Black? Hmmm…

Currently have a black OP39. Lovely watch, with the uniform single stick markers all around. Original owner.

A 39mm Explorer 1 popped up locally for a good price. Basically what I could sell my OP39 for.

I have no need for both watches, too similar in the collection.

I feel like the Explorer would be the better everyday watch, but could still dress up about as well as the OP. On the other hand, the OP39, particularly the black/white models with the uniform dials are pretty rare and perfectly executed watches. More unique.

I know watches are all personal preference, just seeing if anyone can push me one way or the other??

I have the 39MM Explorer 1. It is a perfect watch. You will not regret the switch. Maybe down the road you pickup another 39MM OP in a different color: white, rhodium, etc.

After acquiring a 36mm exp 1, the dial on my exp39 looks so big(obviously). Then I noticed comparing to my OP39 the Exp39 bezel looks so fat. While many will defend the Exp39 is a preferred size I’m starting to get the feeling to let go of the Exp39.

I love the Explorer 39mm. I think the 3-6-9 numerals give it a bit of character that perhaps an OP lacks, but it’s otherwise still understated enough to be sporty or more dressed up. It’s a beautiful watch and wears extremely well. To me, that Explorer was the most underrated watch in the catalogue during its run.

I have a 39mm Explorer and a 36mm Explorer. I understand, on paper, the differences between an OP39 and a 39mm Explorer are quite small, but as a totality, those differences add up to something quite large IMO. The Explorer is just a more special watch for me and I would trade an OP39 for one in a heartbeat if I were in your situation...

The Explorer has the additional benefit of having a locking clasp and Easylink comfort extension. However, the black dial of the OP 39 appears less busy and more aesthetically “pure” (in my opinion). It also more closely resembles a vintage Air King compared to the current model. Dial swaps can also be performed by RSC if you ever get bored with the color (at least for now). Compared to the Explorer, this is a great advantage. A single dial change can totally transform a watch.

Overall, I chose the OP39 despite the additional features provided by the Explorer. I still believe it is a quintessential representation of heritage models. In fact, the original “Explorer” given to Sir Edmund Hillary was really an Oyster Perpetual with traditional dial and hand set. It was not worn on his wrist when he reached the summit.

My first Rolex is an explorer 1, which I bought it 14 years ago and it's still working well. It's classy, sporty and clean looking ,which make it a versatile watch that can be worn in any occasion. I do have other collections , however explorer 1 is still my favourite, probably due to sentimental value.

OP 39 is good looking watch too , have look at them again , I am sure you will be able to make a good decision .
