My brother-in-law refused to pick up his Daytona at retail from AD

OK guys, this happened to my brother-in-law yesterday, I still cannot believe what he did.

So, my brother-in-law was on the waitlist for the Daytona for about a year and a half. Want to point out he wanted a white dial Daytona. Yesterday morning his AD (they live in LA) called him and said congratulations, your Daytona is ready come by to pick it up. He texted me right away, I was very happy for him. Next thing you know, he calls me in a few hours and tells me he refused to pick it up.

What happened, they offered him a black dial Daytona while he wanted a white dial. I was shocked. He said that they had a little fight with his rep, because they clearly knew that he wanted the white dial but instead the allocated a black dial. Truth be told I think his rap was a little bit shocked as well because I never heard of anyone refusing to pick up Daytona at retail from AD.

I asked him what will happen next, he told me that they did not promise him anything soon because they were not sure when the new one will come by, can be a month can be a year could be two years. Plus they had a little argument on unrelated to this watch topic.

I told him he should’ve picked up that watch and trade it for the white dial, that’s my opinion. Or just keep that one.

What do you guys think? Did you do the right thing?

Can I go get it for him? Is it in Miami, I'll leave now and be there this afternoon.

I would not have passed that one up. I have the white but the black dial version is stunning imo…

Same here, I have the white dial and like it a bit better but I think the black is more beautiful. Looks more dressy to me in a good way.

Personally, I would have taken what I could get. You could then trade for what you want.

Exactly. Seems nuts. Trading your MSRP black dial for new white dial the next day isn't flipping. It's paying a little more money to get the one you want.

I get these things trade for three times retail (this way of thinking is the problem) but I wouldn't buy one I didn't want either.

He apparently lives in a different reality than I, so I'm not going to even hazard a comment.

This. I asked for a white stainless and my ad called and offered me a two tone. I’d rather that go to the person who is hunting for that piece and await mine

Have to agree good on him he did not want that black dial Daytona but today Rolex watches are now little more than ££$$€€ objects. And many think they should be bought and sold to the highest bidder irrespective if its the watch you really want.

I agree 100%, at the end of the day its just a watch, its not going to make you smarter, taller, or better looking. Get the one you want

How many years was this ago? I won’t be surprised that he may never get it. There is a huge difference in demand for the panda.

If I was him, I would’ve taken the black daytona and, if I did in fact hated it after giving it some reasonable time. I probably would’ve traded and pay the difference. I don’t see nothing wrong with that. Or am I wrong?

Not that simple- would probably end up costing him at least an extra $10k above what he paid. If he has a good relationship with his AD (yes, it matters), then he will get the white dial within a year.

Your brother in law did the right thing. He stuck to his principles and didn't buy a watch he doesn’t want. Good for him.

Saying that, I doubt he will be getting a call again from this AD.

Still, good on him!

People buying watches they don't want is part of why we are in this mess. Leave it for the person who is waiting on their grail piece, not fuel the grey market with more flipped stock.

This is just what I was about to say. Good for him

So, given that he has shown that he is not a grey dealer, he is not participating in this crazy situation and that black dial Daytona will have been sold within the next two minutes, I think he will receive the call from that AD for “his” panda.

Unless he's the single biggest whale at that AD he may never get the white Daytona. Bad move IMHO.

Or he may. That whole hype around this (in my option ugly and impractical) watch may come to an end for a number of reasons. Maybe we’re not far away from stores hoping to find a customer again to buy that $8-$15k watch….

And maybe that imaginary list isn’t even that long when they offer a black one to somebody who wanted a white dial. They didn’t have anyone who was desperately waiting for that model??

He did the right thing. Why buy a watch that he doesn’t want? Hope it grows on you? He’ll get the white dial and be super happy.

Good for him. I would take either SS Daytona if I got the call, but if he only wanted the white then he would have always regretted it.

This exactly happened to me. Was placed on the waiting list for the white dial in 2016, visited the AD in 2018 and while I was walking around (when they had watches in their cases) the SA told me, I got your Daytona. I was elated but when he brought it out, it was the black dial.

Mentioned to him that I wanted the white dial and that if I could think about the black dial. Called a friend who told me, "if they are offering you a Daytona at retail just take it."

Told the SA I'll take it. It was the best decision I made, although my favorite dial is the white, at that time if I passed on the black dial I definitely would not have received the white dial from this AD and probably would still be waiting for it. Luckily, I put my name out west and was called two months later for the white.

I hope your BIL gets the call for the white dial, but I would not have passed on the black dial. It is more of a stealth watch, one of my favorites for sure.

I don’t understand, if you passed on Black, why would you miss out on White?

Surely, the reverse is true…

I can relate. I turned down white SS Sky-D in hope of getting the blue dial, knowing there was a good chance of it never happening, being a first time buyer.

My thinking was: I'm spending more than 10k on a luxury item that I don't really need, might as well get exactly what I want. Not everybody wants to get into trading etc.

This is how I feel. I think the OP’s BIL made the right choice for him.
