The new Air-King

Crown guards, new case still at 40mm. 0 before 5 on the dial. Thoughts?

A side-by-side comparison with the outgoing model would be helpful.

So lazy from the Rolex design department.

Still an awful watch.

I love it! More symmetrical dial, better lume, crown guards, flip lock clasp... it's all the minor things from the 116900 that have been updated. It even looks thinner? - no more faraday cage, I assume?

Honest question - how is the lume better on this new version?

It doesn't. 3,6,9 are in white gold.

They've added lume on the 3/6/9 presumably after using up all the old WG Explorer MKI numbers.

Now they are using up the Explorer MK2 numbers (from the 39mm). Guess they had extras of those too considering MK2 was shorter production than MK1s now.

...

With this case... dare I say, we might see a 40mm Explorer 1 with crown guards in the future??? (I said it first haha!)

I never like Air King, I have pretty much every single sport stainless steel model but Air King and Explorer until now. I might add 2022 Air King to the stable.

It looks like the watch is slimmer than its previous version which used the Milgauss case with faraday cage. Which is a big plus.

Hopefully this means any new or updated Milgauss in the future will have it's own outright design!

To me, making the 3 6 and 9 with lumes, adding a flip lock and crown guard, thinner case etc just feels like Rolex have made a 40mm Explorer, but with silly minute markers.

Overall, lazy by Rolex!

I may be in the minority but like the current one I have - crown guards don’t look right to me - surprised they didn’t go back to the more classic dial if they were going to redesign it - the link with the SSC bloodhound is well gone.

40mm is a good size. Now you have the airing at 40 and explorer at 36. For those who want a larger explorer I think the new AirKing might be it.

Have been wondering this since 2016. Anyone who owns an Air King can you please explain why someone would purchase this at retail? Or explain why a non-bot/amateur flipper would pay 2x retail for this? Or why it's considered a professional model?

My collection includes a Meteorite GMT, Two-Tone GMT, Batgirl, Hulk, Day-Date and several other models....They are ALL awesome at one particular time or another, but my daily wearer, and my favorite, is the current Air King. It is awesome.

Because it has a rich history and is a perfect example of Rolex DNA in a "one watch for everything" model.

New Movement
Crown Guards
A Zero before the 5

This watch looks pretty cool on a green rubber strap, but this "update" is very surprising. A lot of people who bought gray in the last few months thinking it would be axed are not going to like this update.

I agree. The new model is better in every objective sense.

Any word on the thickness of the new model??

Expect a lot of talk about the "MKI" being a "future classic"
