Lefty Theory

With Phil Mickelson being endorsed by Rolex, will he sport the new GMT with an oysterflex on the course? Was this model created for Phil?

Hahahaha with the negative publicity around Phil, and sponsors running fast from him, I’d say NO.

My theory is Rolex is producing another hard to get piece that will ensure more years of clickbait for the internet, and ensure high prices for collectors of rare or unusual watches such as this left hander. Rolex working to benefit the brand, My .02.

Here's a different, more plausible theory. Jean-Frédéric Dufour (Rolex CEO) is left-handed. He wanted to make a watch for lefties. End of story.

What the CEO wants, the CEO gets. As another lefty I'm all in for it. Thank you, Rolex.

No, I don’t think they’ll customize a piece for Phil

I sure hope not. In my opinion if they want to keep their market position for the next generation, they're wasting their money sponsoring things like golf.

I highly doubt it. The gmt cannot handle the amount of shock and abuse when it comes to golf.

Omega on the other hand created a the Seamaster AT Ultra Light just for that specific purpose. Same with Richard Mille with the watch they made for Bubba Watson and Rafa Nadal.

Let's believe Rolex made the GMT "Lefty" for lefties... Rather than righties wearing a lefty watch on their left wrist.

Just an FYI- Phil has played many rounds with a Cellini.

correct. but he is also a brand ambassador for Rolex. So if the watch fails for whatever reason, I am sure Rolex will send him a replacement on a silver platter.

There should be no real harm in playing a couple rounds golf or any other sport that has high vibration/shock on your wrist... But over time, constant abuse may not be good. Or shall I say the "risk" is not good.

"The biggest risk comes when driving a ball off the tee, as that requires the most force to be generated.

Whenever you hit a ball, a shock wave is sent up the shaft of the club to the Golfers hand and then the watch, this shockwave can cause the watches spring to jump and parts to become loose, leading to a one-stop ticket to your local Rolex watchmaker". - Watchmaker

It still strikes me as upside down rather than lefty - would look better to my eye if they kept the date window on the right . Do like the bezel though

Lefty Theory

Still trying to understand why they put the day window at 9, the Pelagos LHD layout was the one would have used

I agree - The Tudor looks better to my eye - the GMT just looks upside down.

Not if it is worn on the right wrist as intended.

Because it is upside down.

All they did was flipped the dial and date wheel.

It's intended for the right wrist. The date window and crown are at 9 o'clock on this watch for the same reason that the crown and date window are at 3 o'clock on all the others that people generally wear on the left wrist.

No one is doing much for Phil right now. FWIW he had been wearing a rose gold YM40 Oysterflex, so I think any Rolex can take the “punishment”. Then again, his version of striking a golf ball and mine are two very different things, lol!

It's the same as saying you have a Ferrari. It's built to be a "racecar" from factory. Should you be able to take it on track day events and beat the hell of it? Absolutely. Can it take the abuse? Sure. But is it recommended that you rev the hell out of it weekly? Probably not. If you do, it'll be back at sitting on the lift at the dealership waiting for maintenance and parts..

BTW, Mickelson is called "Lefty" because he plays golf left handed but he's right handed for everything else.

Pelagos LHD was IMO a pilot project to test the appetite for a lefty. I think the highest numbered LHD I've seen is 15,XXX so far. It was released November 2016 so lets say 64 months to today making that +/- 235 LHD per month or +/- 2820 LHD per year getting into the wild. Not bad for a niche product.

Nope. I don't think it was made for Phil specifically.

As noted, Phil is right handed. And, doesn't he wear his watch on his left arm?

This new left handed watch is silly. I'm a lefty. I take my watch off for two minutes every time I want to wind it or set the time. It also looks weird. It makes me think of US car dealers selling British cars for Americans who want the stick shift on the left.

Lefty Theory

Anyone stop to consider they did research based on the LHD moving forward? Perhaps they concluded that the date should be at nine based on their clients’ feedback? Many times people make assumptions and don’t realize they’re getting what they want even though they may not know what that is.
