Working with multiple ADs

Does anyone here work with multiple ADs? What’s the strategy of working with the SAs who may notice a watch you didn’t buy from him or her?

I am working with two ADs where one I received my first Rolex (CHNR) and have spend history from other jewelry. But another AD put me on a list for a sub. First one to allocate to me wins. Should I let them know of my Root Beer I bought from the other AD?

Not personally. I buy on impulse and have one AD as a resource.

It’s more fun imop.

You’ll get all sorts of answers. I’ve bought from 2 different ADs. Neither will give me any commitment on delivering what I’m looking for so I’m struggling to understand how there could be any hard feelings if I purchase from anywhere else.

If one AD could assure me they’d deliver within any reasonable timeframe, I’d certainly be loyal to that AD. Last two purchases are from one AD, same sales advisor. I’ll stick with them if humanly possible but who is going to pass on a GMT Pepsi at MSRP..?

Rumor is some AD will allocate watches to first time buyer...

I've started to communicate with a 2nd AD, but no luck at all really. So for me most likely just sticking with my primary AD

My AD encourages me to seek watches from other ADs when I travel. He tells me his feelings wouldn't be hurt if I could score a hard to get piece somewhere else; he'd be happy for me.

A Rolex sale to me is a treat. If he doesn't have to "treat" me and doesn't have to hear me beg for something, I'm doing him a favor. He can sell any of the watches I want many times over.

Now, I don't think that he'd like to hear too much about me buying something else, like David Yurman or a Tudor, from another dealer. That would hurt the relationship.

Yes, i don’t particularly care unless they are blowing up my voicemail with watches. If i got everything that i wanted from one, i wouldn’t need another. One is close the other was a referral from across the country. Close one hasn’t delivered, across the country asks what i want and when I’ll be in town.

They should sell to whoever is spending the most, which isn’t me. I get it.

Why put all your eggs in one basket if you can’t get what you want from your AD.

Thanks all for the responses. Where I’m going at isn’t a matter of loyalty because I personally don’t care. It’s likelihood of AD #2 allocating me a watch when they know I have another source.

My SA/AD has gotten me the last four Rolex I asked for. Not currently looking for anything else but if I was, it would be through them again.

I have a couple more I want but the AD recently delivered me a BLRO so I doubt they will be calling anytime soon.

Working with multiple ADs

I’ve been working with two ADs for a couple years. One sells jewelry and the other sells multiple watch brands.

FWIW, I’ve been able to get some easier to get references like a sub date and explorer. I’ve asked both for a 116518 Newman dial and one says maybe 2023 and the other says they don’t know. We’ll see how it pans out!

I think ad now puts your info in a system to see if you have bought from other stores or to see if you have registered with other stores

Not 100% sure but I heard something like that

I don't think your SA really knows your name, number, all the watches you purchased from that AD, and the ones you have on the waitlist. Each SA has so many clients that they can't remember all those details. Most of the time they probably need to look at the text message history to recall your conversation with them. It's also embarrassing if they try to call you out on a watch that they didn't sell you, only for you to correct them and tell them that you bought it from them. Doubt they would risk the embarrassment.

I think you underestimate the amount and integrity of sales professionals out there in the watch world. Sure there’s some high turnover in jewelry/watch sales, but there’s also the career ones that excel. I have known my SA since 1997 and he most definitely knows what he’s sold me, what I am seeking, and the other watches I have owned. He even knows the cars I’ve had as we share that hobby too.
I know it’s not like this for everyone but if you’re in this hobby for the long run, it’s worth connecting with someone who is also, on the selling side.

If I could somehow be on "the list" with every single AD worldwide, I would. I don't give a crap about who sells me the watch.

I've probably covered about 20 ADs so far, all same answer: Nyet

Only about 1800 more to go

If you want to build up a few Rolex in your stable, buy anywhere. If you want to be a long term collector, stick to one AD. IMO nothing wrong with either route chosen.

If you only work with one AD and they close or your SA retires/quits, you're screwed.

I've been to well over 20 AD's. Talk to them all, it's a stupid game. Who ever sells it to you at retail take it. It's the second one that builds the relationship imho. But again it's Rolex, it's all smoke and mirrors unless you have $50-100K/year jewelry budget you'll get treated like garbage. Any ADs out there want to prove me wrong feel free to PM me I'll drive/fly out today to pick up a SS sport watch, LOL. My closest AD is 150 miles away and I'm local to no one. I'll never get a watch because I'm not driving 300 miles round trip for a $1000-1500 junk purchase and $75 in gas for my mother.

Buy from whomever will sell you the watch you want. Most folks find one relationship works best, but that is not always the case.

Personally, NO. I have my local family owned AD. If they can help me out then great, if not then I will move onto other brands like JLC, GO.

It may serve me well, it may not but life is too short and my time is too valuable to be chasing around, smooching multiple ADs to get a wrist watch.

Strategy?

Sales staff always notice my watch, it's their bread-and-butter; they notice how you are dressed too.

"Thank you" is enough discussion for what I'm wearing, then it's on to what I'm there for.

I now work with only one AD, one SA.

Nothing happens overnight, but my SA and AD have delivered on everything they’ve promised. I’m probably the last guy on the totem pole, but I’m there nonetheless.

If you are in the San Jose , CA area your best bet would be to work with the J. Licht boutique. The boutique will get the most watches, they will also have the most clients. I would visit often and try to meet the manager and get to know everyone there. Nothing wrong with trying multiple ADs but over time I think working with the boutique would be my preference. Now getting the boutique to sell you a watch is another story, so just go in and start talking to everyone.
