Daytona, what's your price level?

[warning: investment topic]

So once again, I'm not buying watch to make money, but buying a watch that holds its value with the possibility of gain is one of the cool thing about a Rolex watch. Even if you don't care about the money aspect, knowing that others value your piece at 30% less than what you paid for just makes you feel stupid. If when you walk out the door of your AD, your watch is only worth 70%, why wouldn't you just buy pre-own and keep your $$

Anyway now with that statement out of the way, for many of us, getting a Daytona from an AD is out of the question. I think it will be 3 to 5 years before I'll be offered a variant of it, and probably not the version I want. With the prices falling, when do you think it's a good price for say the black ceramic bezel version? Bob's watch has them at $35k right now. Personally I think if a reputable seller is selling for $25k, I would take it. So what's your price? I know some of you will say MSRP, and I want that too, but I just don't think that's gonna happen.

Value is very subjective: who would have guessed this & that?
Daytona SS may work for me.
It’s a grail watch for many.
And if health & wallet permits, any White, Black, meteor dial, in any condition: so long as it’s not broken or overpolished, from any year works for me, if it’s not asking for >50% MSRP, and matter not if it’s missing box or papers.

Only thing bothering me from pulling the trigger is not economy.
Rather it’s my OCD with the unbalanced lugs.

I know it don’t bother most ppl.
But I still can’t accept left & right lugs is not balanced due to pushers displacement.

Just me & my 2cents.
If Rolex fix this, will have no prb paying mart

I see this being one of the 'under the radar' upgrades on the inevitable 126500 Daytona next year.

What do you think Rolex would include in an update?

I think the 4130 is still one of the top chrono movements out there for under ~$75k watches. Perhaps Rolex moves the case size of the SS/TT/YG bracelet models to match the rest of the line up. Not sure what the model reference would be for that change, perhaps 216500LN?

If white dials started showing up around $25k, I'd have a hard time saying no.

I'll never pay a penny over MSRP for any watch. Re: Daytona my price would be $0 but only because I'm not a fan of chronographs. I think the Daytona looks good, but as I don't time anything, and it's not a complication that excites me, I'd prefer to see someone else have a bite at the apple.

Good luck OP!

Totally agree, it's going to be MSRP or lower. Makes not sense to overpay MSRP for Rolex unless someone is trying to resell higher than what the bought the price at..

Daytona, what's your price level?

If I could get the the Panda at retail I’d do it, but per the AD not realistic. At $25k+ I’d prefer to buy a VC Overseas and a white dial Speedy racing satisfies the white chrono urge at half the price.

I have panda and wish for a black dial daytona-C but since that is in current production I am going after the white and black 116520s V series and forward. Theyre mid 20s now but at low 20s I think I am going to have to start making moves. I too am about loading up on Daytonas for the future value increases since they are in the lowest of production.

If I wanted one, I would be willing to pay a few thousand above MSRP if it was not available from an AD.

I will bump this thread in 5 years when the market for a 116500 is over 100k.

Until every single owner floods the market with them. It’s not remotely close to worth 100k. If it gets there, it’s going to be through a lot of dealer trading. I sure hope you’re right though, mine will go right up for sale and I’ll buy 2 PM pieces at retail. Happy to let anyone that wants to spend absurd money on SS watches to have at it.

I have no issues paying a bit more than retail if it saves me a year or so of waiting time. I’m talking about an additional 3-5k. In fact this is what I did with one of my Daytonas back in 2019. Multiples of msrp no way but time is money and a few thousand to wipe off a year for two is fine by me.

Of course I’d rather not have to pay extra and get it directly from the ad. 90% of my watches are purchased this way.

msrp + tax is about $16k so i think low 20s isn't a bad deal at all in terms of tradeoff. 5k or so extra to avoid waiting indefinitely. higher 20s is when it gets hard to stomach i think, with it being a steel rolex

Yep and 2 price rises later it will be MSRP at that point but you've enjoyed the watch for two years...

I think we are on our way to 25k. There is a floor somewhere, i can’t see them getting under 20 ever. Regardless of how bad a recession gets. If you’re waiting to buy and they get below 25, i think that’s the time. Same advice I’ve been giving a few buddies that want one.

It’s going to be slow though IMO. You can already see dealers holding prices on certain pieces that are clearly not correct. A few dealers have BLROs at 30k+ still. They are nowhere near that number anymore.

And this, ladies and gents, is how grey’s are trying to figure out where they can place a market bottom. If something is trending down in value, why would you ever pay over sticker for it versus just waiting?
