Explorer II - 226570 or 2 other watches?

Hello all,

This is my first post in the forum so I thank you for the responses beforehand.

A bit of background inf, last "serious watch" I bought was in 2004, the Date Submariner, now I am considering buying a new one to celebrate my second daughter's birth.

I am torn between the Explorer 2, Polar or Black, not sure still which color although I think the Polar it's winning so far, or, and this is when it becomes a difficult choice, looking at current market prices and the waiting list factor, that did not exist before, I am thinking if it would not a wiser option instead of going for the Explorer, to buy a Speedmaster and a Tudor GMT, I know they are completely different watches but cost wise it will be cheaper and I like both of the models. My idea is to build a collection slowly, so far I have the Sub, the Omega SMP 2264.50 a Porsche Design, 2 Tag heuer F1( classic), and a Cartier Tank.

So if there are any owners of the 3 watches mentioned, what is your experience, what would you do in the same scenario?

Thank you

Many of us can get caught up in how many and what kind at the spur of the moment.

Personally, this is a case where the 1 is far more pleasurable/useful to own than a couple of other like-price models together, may be.

If you settle for something else you'll end up buying three watches and probably selling two of them.

In these matters the heart should take the lead. Allowing the head to introduce logic just costs more and takes longer.

I would go for the Explorer. Regarding the color I originally wanted a white but when my AD called with a black dial for me to look at I bought it and have had zero regrets. That was a couple of years ago and it remains one of my favorite watches.

Go for one you love not 2 you like. I would suggest the Polar since you already have a black dial with the Sub.

Name at AD .. don't pay reduculas grey prices..
You can celebrate your second daughters birth by that being the time you put your name down...
Then when she knows what a watch is you will have it and show her
I once bought an alternative to a rolex once.
Ended up selling it and paying twice as much for the rolex after depreciation on the watches I bought and the price the rolex had gone up

Beat the grey get your name down .. your not asking for a GMT or Sub the explorer should be available within a year and again get the one you want the polar .. getting
The black will only make you wish you had the polar

I’m not objective here :)))
Go polar, it’s an amazing watch!
I can’t take it of my wrist, the gmt, wearability, the comfort- just a great watch! And not blingy which I love.
Just saying

Polar II.... defo. It's an extremely well proportioned watch, with acres of lovely brushed stainless, and the combination of the polar dial and blue lume is quite the party trick when it's doing its thing. It's a fun watch and you wont regret it (unless you have tiny wrists).

Buy the one you like best - I've learned through bitter experience not to settle.

And Exp2 should not be too difficult to find. Even via Grey dealers they are getting very close to [MSRP + Tax]

Exp II all the way!!

The 42mm case with the 22mm bracelet give it a “steel cuff” look. Spectacular!!

I got the black one. I always thought I would want the polar but when I saw both in person, the black was stunning.

If I ever get sick of the black, I’ll just send it in to RSC and pay for them to switch it to polar.

Same here, ended up liking the black dial more, but the Polar is still handsome.
That said, I bought mine (2015) pre owned in 2016 for about $5.5K and I'd happily pay a bit more than that, but never the $11-$13K some grays are asking, there's a handful of other watches in that price range I'd pick up first.

Polar and Sub is a great 2 watch collection. Those two get more wear than my Speedy. Pollar also a better GMT than the Tudor IMO.

The Polar Exp II could be the one watch that I keep if had to have no other. It’s a great size on 7” wrist and looks great on brown oiled leather strap too.

First of all, CONGRATS for your second daughter.

IMHO the bond between one watch and the joy a daughter being born is much stronger than "using funds to get a few pieces..." The one watch becomes so much more special!

The new Explorer II is amazing. Wearing my 226570 Polar right now, which I gifted to myself at release to celebrate a milestone. First white dial EVER in my collection. I have had difficulties to take it off my wrist and wear other watches since.

A very special watch in its own right. Go for it! ¡No lo dudes! ;-)

Less is more. This is my tier 1 collection. Love them all but when the Polar Explorer 2 arrives two will leave.

If you're going slowly, the best advice I can give you is to buy only 1 watch.

And...of all the watches you've mentioned, any will work.

In watch collecting sometimes 1>2. Exp II is an amazing watch, the last true tool watch in the glamorous Rolex line up, it is the ugly but charming duckling. I think if you buy anything else, you will eventually get the Exp II as well so my suggestion is to start with Exp II and then trade for the Omega & Tudor if it doesn't speak to you.

If you decide to go with Exp II then I'd go with Polar if 226570 and Black if 216570.

Exp II Polar FTW!

And paired with a Sub or Sub Date, you have an excellent two watch collection.

I'm in the same situation. My other two watch choices would be the white dialed Cartier Santos (large) and either an Omega Seamaster 300 or a Tudor Pelagos (blue dial). I love the Santos, but I think the inevitable scratches all over the polished bezel reduce the beauty of the watch.

I'm leaning towards the Polar Exp 2 for two reasons, I don't have a Rolex in the collection, and frankly it just matches my usual attire (casual to business casual). The versatility of the white dial is excellent, it looks at home on so many different style and color of straps, not that the bracelet isn't what I'd normal wear it on.

My only hesitation is secondary market prices, which average about $2,500 over MSRP right now. If I could find a dealer that would sell to me for MSRP, I'd buy and keep right away. But apparently that is the market dynamic in the world of Rolex right now.

Damn....with those choices, I'd actually take the Santos and Pelagos.
