How much time variance is normal on a new sub?

Hello all,

When I first got my watch, it was gaining about 0.38-.5 seconds a day. I recently got it back from warranty work from RSC, and how it seems t be gaining 2.4 seconds a day. Is this normal? I know it's still under COSC standards, but I see some people getting INSANELY accurate time. This isn't a huge deal, but wanted to see if it's something I need to get them to check into.
Not sure if it needs to be regulated or just keep in keeping on. Thanks!

Cannot understand how anyone can measure 0.38-5seconds a day please remember are 86400 seconds in a day.Depending on how much power reserve the mainspring has and wearing habits time could vary slightly daily but your watch in fine a don't need regulation. And IMHO some posts on forum that boasts INSANELY accurate time either they must have a watch in 10000000 or live on fantasy island.

Very well said Peter. Can we just enjoy our watches and not be so concerned if it’s not as accurate as The Atomic Clock.

My G-Shock syncs with my iPhone 4 times a day. If it says it’s 22:49:35 and my Submariner 114060 says it’s 10:49 and 37 seconds after 1 week of setting and winding it, then that’s scientific enough for me.

I don’t need a fancy timekeeping measurement device to know my Submariner is looking pretty good in terms of accuracy.

Your right Peter,
They just don't understand how a watch is regulated and all that is involved to keep a watch accurate. All the components that come into play along with all the variables. To tell someone that they have a precision movement and then they ask "well why is it 4 seconds fast every day then?" They just don't get it.

Learning how a watch works and having a full understanding of each components functions would explain a lot. Understanding of the work it takes to get a movement with very little deviation between positions, temperature and isochronism would go a long way in easing there mind and then marvel at the movement on there wrist.

If you could have a watchmaker put it on a time grapher, you will know what the slowest position is, and then rest your watch over night on that position. You’ll probably get better than 2.5 spd. If that position is already the way you set it down at night, then 2.5 spd will be all you can do.

Yes this is the speed after a night's rest.

Dial up, crown up, crown down all have different rates. Resting it on the slowest of these might get you better that 2.5

My sub runs 0.5 spd resting dial up at night and -1.2 spd resting crown up at night. If you are keeping track, do it over a longer period of time to get a good average; at least a week and take the reading at the same time of day.

If you just got it serviced, it will change over the next few months. I would definitely not have it opened up and adjusted if you are currently getting 2.5 spd. That is an awesome adjustment they did at service.

Yes, that's what I'd do. Don't know if the traditional guidance still applies today but it's what I use:

that does not apply. I have three 32xx movements, and each is different.

Gaining .5 seconds a day is amazing for a mechanical watch.

This is what I’m talking about if one keeps opening up a watch for relatively minuscule imperfections. I know you are still contemplating on getting the dial replaced given your previous threads.

You’ll eventually find yourself in the rabbit hole at this rate. It will start taking away your enjoyment of the watch.

You are right, watch is great and I am past the dial issue at this point, been just enjoying it. I think I will avoid the rabbit hole and just enjoying the watch. I will get a dial swap when I service it and it will also take care of the time variance in a few years. Cheers!

OP, it does not sound like you’ve been enjoying your watch. It sounds like you’ve been obsessing about it

Give the watch 40 turns and wear it for two week or more and see where you are by that time.

I've had new Rolex watches settle in after a time.

Others claim that this cannot happen, but it happened to me and it's worth a shot.

My watches keep better time when they're not fully wound. YMMV. I'd suggest maybe 10 winds from a dead stop - then wear.

0.38 to 0.5 spd? And watch was sent to RSC to correct this? Well, they are trying to teach you a lesson. It seems.

Exactly the same here for my 124060.

Here’s the thing. My 14060M at +2spd and GMT 16700 at +2spm (per month! after RSC reg and service) are MORE accurate but LESS precuse than the 3230 movement.

The new Sub doesn’t seem to respond to time deviations with different positions as much as the older movements do. So, I do like the more accurate but less precise older 3130 and 3175 movements than the newest one losing consistently just 2 spd. Just to compare I also have an 8800 Omega and is more accurate but less precise than Rolex’s 3230. Omega does respond to time deviations with different positions. Your wearing habits will affect how accurate or precise a watch runs. No two users are the same. But I wear and enjoy all of them.

The bare uncased movements are still tested at the Swiss COSC to a average of between -4+6 over any 24 hour period to get the Swiss chronometer certification. Now on the actual COSC test in the first 10 days of testing the movement could deviate by up to 10 seconds either way in a single 24 hour period, and still pass the test. Now Rolex re-tests on a machine with movement in its case to this new -2+2 average daily spec just to say movement met said spec at time of testing. No purely mechanical movement will keep 100% perfect time no matter the price or brand, out of 86400 seconds in a day close yes, but perfect no just to many variables.
