Sky Dweller Comfort

Greetings!

I'm hopeful that Rolex models will soon become more available, but I don't expect miracles. So, I want to be sure that I'm getting the "right watch".

I own a 1981 TT DJ 36 and have worn it for many years. I also own an original Black Bay 58, but find that despite the better technical specs I prefer the DJ. I've also become more aware of weight, and the DJ is indeed a lightweight. That model had hollow Jubilee links, and with the compact size it is very comfortable on my 7" wrist.

The "problem" is that I'm very intrigued by the Sky Dweller and would like to buy one. The issue is that the watch is very large, especially compared to my DJ. I had issues with the original Black Bay (41) as the weight and dimensions made it uncomfortable to wear. The bracelet was a big part of the problem. There are no micro-adjustments and the watch was either too large or too small. It was also challenging in warm summer weather where my wrist would swell and the band became even less comfortable. That's why I moved to the BB58, but I find that compared to my DJ that watch is also "heavy" and moves around quite a bit on the wrist, again amplified by summer heat and lack of micro-adjustments.

So, do you find the Sky Dweller too large/heavy? Does the micro-adjuster make a difference in terms of comfort/balance? Do you wear it as often as you expected to, or do you find yourself using it less often than hoped, and if so, does comfort impact your decision?

Thanks for the help. This is a major purchase for me and I want to be sure before making the purchase commitment.

Most AD's now have exhibition models, including Sky Dwellers. I think the first step is getting one on your wrist. My Sky is a perfect fit. Good luck trying them on, It's an amazing watch!!

The sky-dweller is a heavy watch. The SS version is about 186g if all links are included. (I weighed it)

The watch head is very heavy so it needs to be worn snug on the wrist otherwise it’ll spin around.

I’ve got a 6.5-6.75” wrist so I had a link removed. Mine is an oyster bracelet.

It wears very comfortably. And I mostly wear it with the easy link extension closed, although sometimes i have to open it when my wrist swells up.

I wear it daily, and the sheer weight of it ensures that you’ll know it’s there.

that's really good to hear,
i'm aiming for it as my last rolex. 17cm wrist. I tried it on at the AD, large but wearable, I want it as it's rolex's best movement.

You can always get a SkyD on Oyster (come on a Glidelock), but it'll run a pretty penny due to the PM.

A SS watch is not heavy imho. The PM version though is quite a chunk.

If the BB is already an issue for you regarding weight and size just forget the SkyD because you will not like it anymore after the honeymoon.

The Sky Dweller sits up very tall on the wrist and that combined with its weight, it can swing around a bit. To overcome that you need to wear the bracelet tight. It is a very substantial piece.

I’m 6 foot tall and my yellow gold/ white dial is amazing, and the weight feels great. I wear it loose and it’s awesome. but I have a pronounced wrist knuckle and it’s fine, all depends how yiunkike to wear it. It’s more bling compared to my other pm’s, but not an issue for me.

The mechanism and way to use is so cool.

I have very small wrists and the Skydweller is probably the most uncomfortable Rolex I own although I would say that all my rolexes are super comfortable. What I mean is that its abit uncomfortable but not a deal breaker. I got it on the jubilee but Im currently switching it to the oyster to see if it that improves things. But the watch is so beautiful and intriguing that even if its uncomfortable, I still like it alot.

One thing I've always liked about Rolex is the wearing comfort. My first was a 42mm Polar and up to buying it, I had never worn a more comfortable watch. I have two Sky Dwellers on Oyster that wear very comfortably. My Sky Dweller on Jubilee is so comfortable it feels like I'm not wearing a watch.

You won't know until you meet one. If you walk past a grey dealer or an AD it will be worth asking to try one on, either real or exhibition.

Try on an exhibition model, as the SkyD is quite hefty, with the head being especially hefty. It sounds to me like you enjoy lighter timepieces, so best bet is to try one before buying.

If you are sensitive to weight and comfort, I would try to shake the idea of a skydweller unless you absolutely can’t resist it. I have one and thought it was fine for the first few weeks, now I would struggle having it as an all rounder; perhaps you don’t need that though. 7.5 inch wrist.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. It's been challenging finding one locally to try on. I've scouted dealers within 100+ miles of my home and none of them have one.

I did speak with a fellow I met at an AD and he has the steel/white gold/blue dial with Oyster bracelet. He's taller than I with a bit larger wrist, and his advice was that if the Tudor Black Bay (41) was too heavy the Sky Dweller would likely be even more so. His collection is large and his daily watch is the Sub. He wears the Sky Dweller "occasionally", but it's less often than his Sub or Daytona. He also has vintage Rolex and enjoys the DJ 36 as much as I do, but his is a far newer version. He's also a big Cellini fan, awaiting delivery of his Moonphase.

As to the SkyD I wear a RG version pretty much all the time. My first SkyD was a Black 934. It’s gonna be earth and Pluto to your DJ. As others have said it’s also quite heavy for SS. One of the heaviest if not the heaviest in SS outside the SeaDweller lineup. I bought the 934 without ever seeing one in the flesh and became absolutely smitten. The best Rolex ever made IMO. Very comfortable. Case is shaped perfectly and the bracelet, well it’s Rolex. Enough said.

Good lord willing I’ll always have at least one in the collection.
