ROO > ROC, am I going crazy?

I finally had the chance to get some *real* wear time with a 43ROO outside of a boutique try on. I have to say, I think I'm preferring it over a ROC at this point. On paper I never thought I would, but I keep coming back to this new Offshore.....

Does anybody else fall into this line of thinking? Price/value is completely irrelevant to me, but I do find it funny how the ROO is already trending under MSRP, so it's obvious the masses disagree. Am I just being a sheep by second guessing what is singing to me due to it's popularity?




*For reference, I've waited years for AP to release their in house Chrono, and this will be the sole Chrono in my collection. These are the only two models I'm considering.

Your personal preference should always come first.

That said a 26420SO is my first AD acquisition and it's definitely a different aesthetics from other lines of AP. It sports well with most casual-ish wears and I always give it some fair share of my time going out.

Which ROO is it? Having the taupe dial, I can confirm they are really great watches.

As to the ROC, I guess it all depends on you and your lifestyle. Go with what your heart tells you, not your head :-)

You should buy whatever sings to YOU and not the subjective opinion of us. IMO the ROC wins hands down, has a better footprint, you get the amazing bracelet, fits better on the wrist, thinner case, better aesthetic chrono pushers. All subjective of course but love my ROC.

I'm pondering the simple black 26420SO. I tried the taupe on at a boutique and it was beautiful! Just not much of a green guy.

I guess what's playing into my logic as well, is that long term I'd like to also integrate a RO (whether regular or jumbo) into the collection. Perhaps I'm thinking there's overlap and a ROO fits better in the grand scheme?

Sounds like you’ve already made up your mind. I’d go with your gut.

There is something to be said about a ROO on a strap - the wearability (in terms of how often you may wear it) definitely beats a RO on a bracelet. Have worn a few including the 26420SO you’re targeting.

That said, I’d rather have a ROC on bracelet. Thing of beauty.

ROO are excellent, and the new 43 is more ergonomic in my experience. I say go with what makes you smile

I prefer the pushers on the Offshore, but that's just my personal preference. I think the decision comes down to the current state of your collection and how you envision it evolving. If you plan on adding a RO on bracelet down the line, and lack a tough sports watch, then the Offshore seems like the obvious choice. Even though I am still honeymooning with my 26240, I love my black 43mm Offshore and it is my clear travel/adventure watch.

I have both and I find them very different. However I do prefer my ROC.

There's a near mint 26420 on this very forum for $36. Takuya also just sold one for that. many other examples all over the place.

I wear ROC on strap the most. Hated ROO 44 for my wrist size and fit wise, but 43 worked. Loved the in house movement and ceramic bezel. Felt like being in a gwagon and bullet proof one at that.

Both work in a collection, but no reason why ROO can’t be the preferred one with the right wrists!

Personally I think the question is more driven by do you wear long or short sleeves more often.

Casual wear, I'm hubbed in TX, FL and Bangkok so it's short sleeve constantly. and if I'm wearing work/professional attire with dress shirts, I prefer other watches (leather) as opposed to something like a Royal Oak anyhow. This is entirely a casual type purchase for me, something to wear on weekends, evenings, etc.

My only real grip is case height, which is quickly becoming a moot point based upon where the height of the ROC has gone.

Sounds like ROO is king of the hill for you then and totally makes sense.

Yeah, with 26331 vs ROO the distinction was a bit clearer. 26240 is getting up there in thickness. At that point, I think for the 26240 one should go all out with RG on bracelet. Those are seriously impressive, although maybe not quite suited for all occasions.

Don't blame you at all. Had the opportunity to try on a few pieces today at the AP House which thankfully took their time with us.

I really really like the ROO just not at what is becoming the new price...

It wears great, quick change strap is awesome, ability to customize the entire look in 2min and the ceramic bezel gives it a bit more sturdiness and wearability without being overly wrist conscious. For a thick watch it wears much thinner...

The only thing that gives me pause is the lack of the bracelet, which at this price would be great to have. That said, having been able to try on the 38mm Chrono (my wife now wants it ) I can definitely see the appeal. It's more beautiful in person than I expected. Got some thinking to do...


Side note: first visit to the House and I am totally bought into the concept now!
I thought it was a bit gaudy when I read about it, but the vibe is very relaxed, much less transactional and more a "getting to know you and chat while you try things". They are now doing brunch, so you can grab a great bite to eat and hang out - really cool esp with the SAs that were there. The fact that they have a bunch more pieces to try on didn't hurt either. Pics attached

Lol thank you - unfortunately she seems to think so too... Lol.

May have to adjust my list. She has really tiny wrists, so I had assumed we were limited to 34mm max but the SA was nice enough to broaden our horizon... Dangit

Full size AP looks amazing on females. My wife loved the Offshore on her wrist. Granted, she's Asian and can pull off oversized clothing as well, so everyone's mileage may vary. Works great for me though as she just wants me to build out the collection and let her 'borrow' everything aside from her diamond DJ.

Got my wife the 34mm 77450st 50th and it looks great on her wrist. Her daily is a 36mm yellow op

It's like an olive green. I preferred it on the black to match the subdials.

My favorite was definitely the basic black with silver subdials and red accents, gives a motorsport/racing vibe that I was immediately drawn to. If you like green though, the smoked taupe is out of this world. One of the best color schemes AP has done for the ROO (ever) in my opinion.

Tried the same pieces at the AP house last week Definitely a nice place for hanging out for a couple of hours!

Regarding ROO vs ROC: Definitely appropriate for different use-cases, and if the ROO fits the bill better, why not go for it? Best solution of course is to have both

Fascinating post OP. As someone who has 2 ROs (15500 and 26240 at retail) and no ROOs, some would say that I’m incredibly lucky and should just forget the ROOs. After all, some only see ROO as merely an expensive entry ticket into the AP club. However, after trying my brother’s 43mm ROO. I find myself longing for a ROO more than I’ve longed for others (e.g. 116500ln, patek 3940 etc). There are a couple of reasons.

The ROO represents (to me) good old fashion manliness. Strong presence, unapologetic, hardy. I don’t care how small your wrist is, you go hit the gym, get your forearm as veiny and triumphant as possible, and you go rock that ROO. When I wear my usual hyped pieces, I feel dainty, apprehensive, weary of people/things close to me. With the ROO, it’s the opposite. With plans to maintain an active lifestyle with young children, I can’t think of a better luxury+sporty timepiece than a ROO.

ROO also represents a continuation of the rebellious nature of AP, which is why I love AP; kinda the same way characters like Maverick (Top Gun) gets so much affection. RO challenged convention, and it worked. The ROO took things to a more extreme level, I mean Genta hated the ROO; AP was probably thinking then: “ well so what if Genta hates this, we are going to dictate how trends evolve”. Well we all know how popular ROOs became. Discussion for another day, but AP is one of the few examples where their product catalogue looks completely different from previous decades. I love that, that to me deserves respect and recognition. What’s the strongest company in the world lately? Apple. See the similarities?

The issue I had was the retail price (I will note that I have only bought AP at retail, and intend to continue to do so). Astronomical relative to the RO/ROC. But after thinking about it, you’re essentially getting a haute Horology encased with tool watch hardiness. If you just want ‘Tool’, get a Rolex (although there are people out there that baby their Rolex). If you want high end watch making, get a RO. Well if you want the best of both worlds, you gonna have to pay up son.

Now I’m not going to sit here and say one is better than the other. But there’s so much to love about a ROO, and a timepiece you have to add if the AP ethos resonants with you. I hope I’ll be able to add one soon, as of now, my AP collection feels incomplete
